Can everyone sign this petition to convince Sony to legalise modding?
http://www.change.org/petitions/legalise-ps3-moddi
Few things to add :
- PS3's hardware might not be able to run some mods, I know, but Sony can set up sites just for PS3 mods.
- How many signatures should I be looking for? Its currently at 5,000 but whats more realistic?
- Maybe someone could set one up for Xbox (Please dont start fanboy wars) couldn't do this my self because I dont know Microsoft's e-mail
- There is profit to be made for Sony, ArmA 2's sales rocketed after the release of the "DayZ" mod.
- Advertise it if you sign it.
Thanks in advance.

How wouldyou do this, you can open up the system, mainly because many many multiplayer games would ba hacked, so you would have to let someone pass every mod thats made/submitted, and go through all the code, and they they would have to set up a way to access/install the mods, its a lot of work really.

IMO this petition is doomed... For one, it's not Sony holding back the ability to mod on PS3, it's the general logistics and inconvenience of it. It's down the the individual developers to allow modding, but it is a huge investment of time to make it work, and the return on that investment is minimal at best. Especially when it reduces your ability to drive revenue with new content via DLC.
It has been tried though, with mixed commercial success (Little Big Planet, Mod-Nation Racers).
The scope for complex tools just isn't there on a console like it is on a PC. And could you really imagine typing in scripts into the PS3's text entry system? The alternative is to use a PC to develop mods and then upload to some cloud that the game can talk to, or transfer using USB storage. But none of it is exactly convenient.
I honestly don't think you've thought about the implications or the implementation of what you're asking.
