To "see" the higgs boson you have to smash the heck out of other particles in a particle accelerator, it's not like they just found it in a shoe box so can now use it for other stuff.

Wouldn't it be funny if they did find one in a shoe box though, having spent all that money on the LHC?

I thought it was nicknamed 'Gods particle' because it didn't exist/couldn't be found.

In that case, there's a possibility there is a god?

I'd rather that than join your fraternity of Topics With Alienating Titles.

Ok so they've found this particle which gives others mass. Now the question is where does this particle get its mass from?

Re: OK, so they've found the God Particle, does that now mean we eventually get transporter technolo

I thought the issue with transporter technology was that it is impossible for us to send or process such vast quantities of data (I remember reading it would take years or at least weeks to send the data somewhere), we have already transported stuff.

Higgs Boson has no practicle applications straight away. It was found to understand why things have mass. However most of science thinks that practicle applications will eventually become clearer, as we understand stuff in greater depth it seems obvious  that the understanding will lead us to do things better.

Mass is resistance to acceleration and a measure of gravity on an object in simple terms. If we could change those things the world would forever be changed. No one has even implied that possible, but your transporter technology could be replaced with flying cars in that scenario. I guess.

Even if you could teleport, it would kill you.

Besically one end of the teleporter would destroy you at one end, send you to the destination and then rebuild you, meaning that none of your memories or thoughts would exist anymore and also as fen said it would take too long to transfer the sheer amount of data needed.

As far as I know physicists have only been able to teleport a single photon a very short distance.

hey hey

IF they actually have found the Higgs Boson...  What is that made of :/
