RTS is kinda dead at the moment. It seems to be coming back recently, which I hope it does.
I'm not sure which style of RTS you like, so here's a bunch.
StarCraft 2 is my recommendation, decent story, but main focus is multiplayer, which is fun. And hard to play. Very hard. It may be worth waiting for the next patch to go live (should be soon) so you don't have to get used to the current UI and then the new UI they're bringing in patch 1.5.

End of Nations will be F2P but isn't out yet. (F2P model will be purchasing cosmetic skins. No pay to win.)
Command and Conquer is dead with C&C4, I will be amazed if Generals 2 is good when it's out next year. It might be worth taking a look at C&C3: Tiberium Wars + Kane's Wrath.
Company of Heroes seems to be pretty good, I've had it for a while but not had time to play it much.
Frozen Synapse is a turn-based strategy but a very good one. Might be worth a look.
R.U.S.E is a more traditional RTS, a few interesting mechanics.
As for FPS, I don't play them much, but I'd recommend Tribes Ascend.
Also the Steam Summer Sale should start soon so you may want to hold out for that for games available on Steam.

Diablo 3 is alright. It has some pretty big flaws at the end-game but it's fun, and hopefully Blizzard continually patches it to make it better.
