I've been advised by another mod to take that route and tried it before. However the other person just came here to rally support with a fairly abusive thread that wasn't exactly, er, truthful.

The thread was brought to my attention by a friend due to the hostile nature of it, but it was closed before I had a chance to reply, although I did have enough time to see just how many GD regulars jumped in to lend support. It's understandable as they are popular, and I am not, but it is indicative that PMs backfire.

So in the end, I wouldn't recommend the PM approach. However, the forum does have an "ignore" feature, which it might be best to recommend instead?

I'm trying it out to see if it works...

You can't ignore posts. It ignored personal messages from the person, not posts/threads made by them.

I assumed it ignored posts as well, I dunno I have never done it.

I would be cautious of the PM approach, I have heard that it can get nasty and it becomes your word against theirs.

Can't people just agree to disagree or just decided "I think that person is a tool, I will ignore their posts that I dislike as they are a tool and/or troll"
