'Piracy' Student to be Extradited

[ Edited ]

A Sheffield student can be extradited to the US to face copyright infringement allegations, a judge has ruled.

Richard O'Dwyer, 23, set up the TVShack website which US authorities say hosts links to pirated copyrighted films and television programmes.

The Sheffield Hallam University student lost his case in a hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

If found guilty in a US court he could face up to five years in jail.

Absolutely disgusting in my opinion. I think they are right to claim that this poor lad is being used as a guinea pig by the flawed system.

Disgrace really, hell of a difference between hosting the files, and linking to them

Yeah, if he did not actually host the files then this is ridiculous.

And if he really did earn over $230,000 in advertising revenue on the back of copyright material as alleged, then he deserves it. If he didn't then we should assume he would be found not guilty.

It's about time the people who do do this are held to account.

I think you'll find that depends largely on where they are being extradited to.

Don't look too much into that terrorist thing. Because they are jailed here in the UK, then get released... put on a plane to America, go to jail there, get released possibly, put on a plane to somewhere like Syria, got to jail there and usually come out with two legs that no longer work properly.

But it is good sales to say that it was Human Rights that stopped them going when the US wanted them. The reality is they are tried in the first nation, then the second and then their home nation under pressure of the first two.

It turns a 10 year sentence into a life sentence.
