I hate to gripe, really I do, but c'mon, I popped my GT5 in last nite and thought let me update & play some online etc. It told me there was an update. it started with a 1Gb download which was 1/10. So I decided to let it download through the night on my newly acquired dsl line with 35Gb cap. I went to sleep woke up this morning for work and decided to "just see" whats new.... My PS3 was off, so I switched it on, started GT5 and got the same message.. and update was available, I thought, cant bem but ok, lets see, and there was my day maker, the download through the night had failed, and when I went to sleep it was on 50% +-.
Now, the PS3 is a wonderful thing, can do so many things, can even almost make coffee in the mornings (I am busy teaching it) but why, why oh why cant a simple little download manager be incorporated into the wonderful system, to allow continuation of broken downloads? I am not willing to waste time, electricity just for another failed download. Because of the lack of this simple little fix to enable download management, its off to trade the game.
For the record, same thing for DC Univerce online, I also installed and drooled while waiting for the huge install, and 100+ Mb online update before installation, just to be greeted with... an 8GB!!!!!! update???!!!???
I mean, seriously, in the land of Gate's and Sony & all the billionaires, where bandwidth & speed are not a problem, sure, have huge downloads, but for the common man, make updates available via media (CD, DVD, Bluray). Again, off to trade the DC Universe without even playing it.
Anyway, thats my gripe, can Sony not incorporate a download manager to continue broken downloads for us poor people who pay premium for DSL & Data (remembering that the lost download still counts as data used)
Thanks Sony..... c'mon, you can do it......

The PS3 download manager works pretty well for me. Was Gran Turismo using a bespoke download system or the firmware one? I know DCUO uses a bespoke one, but you can just quit out ni the middle with the PS button and it will happily resume later.
Maybe $60 million development cost and 5 years just weren't enough for Gran Turismo? Probably should have spent some time and budget on actual game aspects rather than test driving cars around tracks...

Games are going Download Exclusive.
So if your BB can't handle it then may be time to abandon BroadBand gaming on consoles.
GT5 has not had an update released in months. (Feb 16th 2012,) you have had MONTHS to down load GT5 Version 2.05 So it would not CLASH with any other titles to download.
If You have choosen to REMAIN ofline with games then. YES. you will get hit With massive downloads all together at the same time as you have only just gone back online. If you had actualy been online regular. You would have downloaded GT5 patch along time ago. ![]()
DCU online Is a complete Features Update its not a patch for bugs. So will be bigger as its a Content update. DCU is infamous for using Bit torrent type system to download the content and Does Resume Were it left off. IF you shut down the downloader correctly.
The choice to get an ONLINE only title when you have bad/capped DSL broadband is a strange choice. ![]()
Auto downloader
PS+ Users have an auto downloader, which Auto downloads patches regularly every 2 days. This means that normaly you won't be required to download a patch as it Would have Auto downloaded at a set time for when your at work or asleep every 2 days. ![]()
Your problem Is not the Patches or updates realy.
Its that.....
You are not Playing the games regular enough to get the patches when released and you have gone back to OLDER titles you stopped/ or never played... ![]()
These titles have provided Content updates for there REGULAR players.
GT5 2.05 Bugs and Content update was released in FEB 2012 its now MAY 2012. ![]()
DCU Has to release content regular they have PAYING monthly users. ![]()
It may be time to consider ether upgrading the DSL or remove it from PS3 and stick with offline only... and only enabling broad band for firmware updates.

Here's a quick reply for Graphite, I know the obvious (why is it that by stating the obvious, you think you have answered the problem???)
By the by, I bought the game on disk, have played previously online, decided to play again online, now that I have my new BB installation, which can happily afford the downloads.
MY GRIPE IS:
If the downloads are so big, the download management thereof sucks. Dont make a flame where there is none.
By me not playing online for months, doesnt make me a troll, it is after all, my choice. I simply think, whethere I sit online 24 hours a day playing PS3 games and thus keeping my games updated, or if I go online after 3 years is again my choice, is not a right or wrong, the PS3 should have a download manager installed, which can resume broken dowloads, etc. simple.
When I click to update the game, it also tells me I cannot perform background downloads, so... I think my point is valid. Why do I have to lose hours and data for nothing, if it can be fixed with a little download manager?
As far as games going exclusive to download, we have been hearing that song for years, and just like cloud computing, the idea is good, as long as everyone has the broadband and speeds. Lets face it, our kids may enjoy that, but we will be old men with grey beards before that becomes the norm.
Anyway, my gripe done, no response necessary. Was actually hoping Sony would read this and instead of offering an opinion, rather consider a download manager option, it just makes sense.

Paying for plus is your answer?
He shouldnt have to pay for plus, also it may not fix his problem. His problem is slow speed and not a lot of bandwidth, if it was downloading every 2 days and having odd failures every so often his problem may be increased not reduced.
I have had downloads fail, but it does not worry me because my cap is so large.
If i had a 35gb limit, even a 500mb or smaller file fail would send me into rage. The ps3 should always be able to resume a download regardless of who is supplying the download, I 100% agree with the OP.

The OP said that he can't download big files? Then get yourself another router which is capable downloading large files. For me, I use "Wireless N" for downloads. However, you'll need to use LAN socket (CAT5) to obtain full speed instead of using PS3 wireless for downloads.

Ethernet Wifi N gaming adapters have been Paid for by lots of Users who wanted to use there wifi N router to stream 1080p Films to PS3 and to save hardwiring the home.
Available from ALL good online shops.
Example
Netgear released their 1Gb/s wifi router this month. but announced the Ethernet 1Gb/s Wifi adapter has been delayed.
Thunderbolt hardwired connection will still be faster on new Equipment at 5Gb/s. 5Gb/s is to fast for most HDD.
