i hate it when people say things to do with space are boring, as if anything about it is boring. If people knew the hard work intellect and extreme danger involved they would think different. Also if they knew about some of the g forces and speeds as well. Riding the shuttle at take off is apparently like unbelievably amazing so there. (what i meant to say was that its quite a thrill ride and most people wouldn't be able to take it)
But moreover how can it be boring going boldy where no (very few) men have gone before?!

Exactly, but the Space Shuttle has become a victim of it's own success, it was designed to make space flight routine, but in doing so it has lost a lot of popularity due to people thinking it's just the same thing over and over again.
I think it's brilliant and the numbers that are used to describe the shuttle are simply staggering. ie. 13.8 MILLION Newtons of thrust after launch, thats an unimaginably large amount of force.

agreed, but then challenger happened, oh my god the irony.
Americans got bored of space on the 3rd mission to the moon (apollo 13) Can you believe it !!!!! The third mission and everyone got bored and all the tv networks refused to broadcast it all ! Sheesh. Then it went ***** up.
Actually its nasa thats the victim of its own success they are sooo professional and intellectual and dedicated and precise that they minimalise disaster in all the dangerous situations they place astronauts in. Apollo 11 (1st moon landing) was very nearly a complete disaster on 3 or 4 occassions. Eg the lunar lander nearly ran out of fuel and crashed and also the mechanism for jettisioning off the moon was damaged and had to be repaired with a felt tip pen buzz found. Imagine that buzz and neil left on the moon after all the sucess and triumph and talking to the president on the phone live from the moon, only to be left there to rot! But nasa didn't make any of that known to the press or public so everyone thought going to the moon was easy therefore boring.

You watched that 'NASA's greatest missions' program, didn't you ![]()
Hopefully if/when they launch the new Ares ships public interest will somewhat resume, as except for the ISS nothing really has progressed (in the public eye) since the first launches of the Shuttle. Obviously technology has progressed massively since the 1980's but the public want to see us sending people away from the safety of Earth's orbit, not just sending probe after probe out there. And it's about time all the Space Agencies combined instead of just expecting NASA to do everything.

Probably i watch most things space related.
and hmm agreed, although fair play the ISS is a massive fete or engineering and international collaboration and i don't think its getting anywhere near enough press coverage, i can't remember a news piece or anything on the ISS tbh.
Some say nasa funding will be cut drastically and nasa's future is actually in question. And I think tbh americans just think we are gods we went to the moon (SIX times) and can't be bothered to do it again, its just a case of 'been there done that'. Only when china starts testing their space craft in outer space for lunar missions will the usa government take notice, either that or its up to private companies to continue space exploration, of which there are a few about one being Virgin Galatic.
