The main problem with your singer is he sings way out of his range. When performing cover versions there's always the templtation to fall into the trap of 'stars in their eyes' performances, trying to mimic the original vocals, which is exactly what your lead singer does.
He's perhaps not the best at timing and holding a tune, then again there's plenty of successful bands with the same type of lead singers, but he certainly needs to find his own range and style and sing within that to make it sound ten times better. He might then be able to concentrate on a little stage presence rather than concentrating on doing a good impression.
