THE SETUP
Your typical zombie survival scenario EXCEPT for the fact that the focus is not on actually killing zombies.This mod is primarily about human interaction/emotion and of course survival.

THE STAKES

Your beans and bandages guard them with your life!

You can only play one character at a time and death for each character you play is permanent. If you've survived for weeks out in the wilderness (all of your character's items/info are saved to a master server), only to be shot in the head by a marauding bandit player, that character is gone forever. When you respawn, you will start a new character.

HOW TO GET STARTED

You will need:

Arma2 (Full version or Free version) and Operation Arrowhead (Fully patched)
OR 
Combined Operations. (which includes both Arma 2 and its expansion operation arrowhead in a nice handy pack)

Combined operations is most easily obtained directly from steam and is the easiest method of getting up and running for your life in DayZ.

*As of the date of this post you no longer spawn with a pistol so be prepared to go in super sneak mode to get round zombies and get loot!

Thanks for that Astro.

Nice start up guide.

Judging from that map I am located near Novy Sobor.  I shall attach some images of my endeavours later on.

What servers do you guys mostly play on?  I just try and go on anyone that is daylight with good ping and that isn't overcrowded.

Also a few things.

1) Can I shoot animals like rabbits to then eat or is it just a waste of a bullet?

2) How do I drink from a lake, can I not just fill it up with an empty can or something?

3) What is the best way to approach zombie filled towns.  I need to go in them to get supplies but way too many zombies on surrounding it that I often get too scared and turn away lol.

1)

First before you start being harrased and sued by PETA you'll need a Hatchet (to get wood), a hunting knife(to gut the animal) and matches and you're all set to go on your animal mudering rampage.

In terms of how much meat killed animals give you it goes as follows:

Chickhen & Rabbit = 1 Meat 

Boar, Goat and Sheep = 3/4 meat (can't recall exactly)

Cow = 8 meat 

Each slice of meat will not just replenish your food meter if you're down on blood and no buddy with a blood bag it'll give you 800 blood compared to only 200 for tinned food.

Walk into the lake although don't go too deep no need to go swimming and you risk losing your gear if you stay in too long press G right click the empty water bottle and click fill water should do it. 

3) 

Well the ultimate looting weapon for infected filled towns is a silenced weapon as they don't aggro zombies but as they are rare simple smoke grenades do wonders as do empty jack daniels whiskey bottles, to equip them press F if you have either in your main inventory until you see its name pick a height and hold in left mouse allthough not too long as it can go quite far lol. Bascially if you just take your time and make use of prone you shoud be ok.

Oh right didn't realise those whiskey bottles would be useful, well I did at first when I first started playing dayZ but after playing a while I just thought it was common junk.

As for filling up water bottle in the lake.  What could I use for a water bottle? I know for one of my past lives I did have an empty canteen so I assume that be fine, but could I use that empty whiskey bottle or coke can to fill up with water, or just use my hands? 

I got the hatchet, a sniper rifle but no matches.  Bah so close yet so far.

Manually watch the installion video it covers beta patch installing.

Tip: If you have the beta patch installed and want to launch Arma from Steam:

- Go into \arma 2 operation arrowhead\Expansion\beta
- Copy arma2oa
- Go into \arma 2 operation arrowhead\
- Paste that file to overwrite the non-beta version.
- Launch through Steam as normal.
