Re: The Retro Corner

The first computer I had bought for me when I was a wee nipper was a 48k ZX Spectrum (the rubber key type), and it came with that classic old Ultimate (who we now call RARE) game called Sabre Wulf.

It lasted for about two weeks before its first visit to the local computer shop for repairs, as I had pulled the Interface 2 out of it while I was playing, so fried CPU, and muggins here crying my eyes out for a week while I waited for it to be repaired. Once I got it back then everything was bliss :smileyvery-happy:

Off the top of my head, my fave retro gaming memory was getting through that damned Banyan Tree in Jet Set Willy without losing a life.

My least favourite memory (if you can consider PS1 games to be retro) was me playing Slash Mode on   Bushido Blade. For those who don't know the goal of the game was to kill 100 opponents. Doing so would unlock a character who used a gun (a bit of a cheating barsteward in a game about swords!)

Anyway, I got to 99 kills. The only injury I had was I was limping. Be aware that you could get killed with one hit in this, or say if you'd been hit in the leg then you would limp. So the last guy comes towards me, and I'm getting nervous now as it had taken bloody ages to get as far as this. Then I go for it with a hit to the head. However, he thinks EXACTLY the same thing at EXACTLY the same time. We both go down. Game over. I unlock nothing. But I do throw a joypad so hard the neighbours heard it smash into 481 separate pieces followed by half an hour of swearing.

I still have my lovely Speccys and a pile of CRASH magazines dating from July 1984 that I just can't bring myself to get rid of...

Wow this is like an educational history museum, my earliest memories are a  relatives/friends Playstation console, smply blown away by the amazing graphics, Gran Turismo game as PC educational games was all I was allowed by the folks.

The whole graphics thing was somewhat different back then. The two main rivals (the Spectrum and the Commodore 64) both had advantages in graphical senses. The Speccy could handle 3D (yes, there WAS 3D back then, as primitive as it was compared to now!) better than the C64 but colour was a different story. Many games suffered from the famous "colour clash" as any self respecting Speccy owner will tell you.

The Commodore's advantage was that is could use colours much more effectively, however the disadvantage was it couldn't handle 3D quite as good as the Speccy. The Commodore also won in terms of musical ability too, with its now legendary SID chip.

The main mags I used to read were CRASH and Your Sinclair for the Speccy and Zzap 64 for the Commodore. Like I said, I still have a load of CRASH mags dating back to July 1984 around somewhere...

Not the first I played on but the first computer etc I owned (jointly with my sister one Christmas). Bundled with 20 games, it was awesome. Our favourite was Icicle Works.
