Re: The Retro Corner

Wanted a BBC, but all we could afford was the specky or ZX spectrum 48, which broke down and got changed to the 128k, oh the memeorize flooding in, oh flight sim & Harrier attack was my favourites.

Re: The Retro Corner

So tell us folks. What was the first game you ever completed?

I seem to recall mine being Turrican 2 on the ST. Which was a mean feat to say the least.

Re: The Retro Corner

I can't rightly remember, must have been one of the Dizzy collection or a game called Megabucks on the Speccy 48k.

Managed Turrican 2 on the Amiga, excellent game.

I think the first one proper i can remember was Streets of Rage on the MegaDrive, but one of the best retro games ive completed was Michael Jackson's Moonwalker on the Mega Drive.

Re: The Retro Corner

I first played on a VIC-20, then moved on to a C128, got a Sega Megadrive (Only had the first Sonic game), and then a PC. But ever since the VIC-20, I was always more into programming than gaming, but I finally bought a PS3 in 2008. But being more of a programmer than a gamer, I missed a lot of the console games.

All the big games, which Everyone seems to have played, such as Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, etc. I never really played any of them.

But I played quite a few games on the C128 (C64 games). In fact, there are _loads_ of games which I thought were really fun, but which I never completed -- which I sort of regret.

But just the other day, I thought "I wonder if anyone has played Thing on a Spring, recorded it and uploaded to Youtube. It turns out someone had. I played that game a lot, but I never finished it. One of the most impressive games I've seen was "The great Escape" for the C64 (concerning it was from that era..). It's also available on Youtube(!).

I loved construction kits, which allowed you to create your own games/levels. I remember playing Boulderdash Construction Kit a lot. And that breakout game .. TRAZ! A wonderful game.

Other than construction kits, I loved playing Bruce Lee. The music to Hawkeye I listen to even today. I almost completed the game "Labyrinth", but there was a read error on the tape while loading what I believe to have been the last or second to last level. Very annoying! But one of the really big annoyances was that I never finished Knightmare. It was such an impressive game (at the time) to me. I got stuck on a certain puzzle. Oh, an Paradroid (To this day, I consider this to be one of the best games ever). Wizball was cool also (I mean .. a wizard stuffed in a green smiley-ball, and the wizard's cat stuffed into a smaller smiley-ball -- it's pure genious, I tell you!)

Even though I never had an Amiga, several of my friends did. It had lots of brilliant games. Turrican, Bloodmoney, Sword of Sodan (insanely difficult game!).

Hmm.. I'm getting a little misty eyed here. Better stop now. :smileyhappy:

Anyway: Hot tip for those of you from that same era: If there's an old title which you never finished, which you regret, check Youtube!

Re: The Retro Corner

Ahhh, the great Boulderdash Construction Kit. You, sir, are made of WIN for mentioning that. My mates and myself spent months making more and more evil levels with that.

I also remember Sensible Software's Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit, that was so awesome. And so was Wizball, another of theirs :smileyhappy:

Paradroid was sheer awesomeness. What a shame Andy Braybrook went back to programming for insurance companies.

I'll have a go on Uridium a little later in his honour :smileyhappy:
