Thinking of getting a Bulldog, anyone else have one?

I've always admired the bulldog it seems like a real family friendly dog. Has anyone got one and what do you think of the breed?

get a lab. They are soppy lovely animals.

I have a springer (as well as a lab) and he is great but I'd still say labrador.

Re: Thinking of getting a Bulldog, anyone else have one?

What type of bulldog?

Ill assume british and not french or american.

British bulldogs are very family friendly, no bulldogs are for new owners in my opinion, french and british are among the most pig headed stubborn dogs I have ever met, and they constantly challange you for dominance.

For it to be in a healthy family it needs an owner that understands what is dominant behaviour and what is not, when to treat it and when not.

An example of how pig headed they can be, if you try to walk a bulldog that you are not dominent over, it may just sit on the ground, wont move, will just sit because it knows you want to walk, you can drag it all the way down the road on its ass, and it will just sit and look at you and keep trying to walk the other way.

When you get the balance right, they are the funniest full of charachter dogs you can meet. They really are amazing.

You can do it as a first dog, but read up a lot on dominant behaviour, and think about taking it to training classes,

I know a lot about dogs, and it took me about 3 months to win a french bulldog over and it was 3 months of pretty much hell as she pulled every trick in the book rather than submit. One time she even bit me, which is very very rare for the breed, and it took me for total surprise as I was just sitting on the chair and she looke in my face like "" then bit my shoulder, some set of jaws on them..

Lol but yeah, great dog, get ready for possibly a huge battle with them, but thats half the fun of them, when they do something stubborn like sit somewhere and wont move, you laugh about it later.

If anything the spaniel is, I'm talking purely on good with kids. If I have to stick my hands in their mouth to pull something out the lab wouldn't bite me if I did it 1000 times.

The spaniel might 1/100.

Think pinky and the brain, pinky is lovely and sweet etc but the brain is the star.
