As for the old 360 vs PS3 sales, its simple. The 360 had a fair head start on the PS3 and there was...... shall we say..... some retail resistace... to the PS3, mostly due to its "high price". Incidentaly, the PS3 was not significantly more expensive than the original Playstation or the PS2. Sales relative to the the time on sale put the PS3 ahead.
As for which appears more common does seem to be a personal thing. PS3 owners seem to think there is a greater emphasis on the 360 in game shops and vice versa.
Personally, i think that the 360 is holding the PS3 back, due to the majority of multi-platform being programmed for the 360 and we get a half hearted port, based on what is a technicaly inferiour machine. As an example, who thinks MGS4 or R&C could be done on the 360?
