Here's the scenario:
There is a rabid hound to your left. There is a Talos to your right.
Both enemies are close to you, but the hound is closest.
The hound is grabbable. The Talos is not.
You are facing to the left.
You are pushing the stick to the left.
You WANT to grab the hound to the left.
You push the grab button.
Kratos turns around and tries to grab the Talos. Obviously, the grab fails, and Kratos goes into his 'missed grab' animation. He is vulnerable during this time. The Talos and/or the hound attacks Kratos and damages him. Rage and frustration ensue.
Scenarios like this one occur throughout God of War 3. They are infuriating and pointless.
The first two God of War games were NOT like this! In those games, Kratos grabbed in the direction in which you pushed the stick! Those games actually obeyed the controller inputs of the player!
Patch God of War 3 and fix the stupid auto-targeting which disobeys the player's inputs!

Don't be daft. The whole reason why the grabbing mechanics are so bad is because they PREVENT skillful play. The difference between a good player and a bad player is that the good player knows which enemy to grab. But if the game prevents you from choosing which enemy to grab, there is no scope for skill in this area.
I just beat the Hades Cerberus Breeder fight under NUR+ conditions. This means: no gorgon eyes, no phoenix feathers, no minotaur horns, and no upgrades to weapons, items, and abilities. So I think I am skilled enough at GoW3. But the game is needlessly cumbersome and frustrating with such a broken grabbing system. If there is a grabbable enemy within range, and you're pressing the stick in his direction, but the game decides to make you grab a different enemy, something is seriously wrong.
Also, remember that the grabbing mechanics were not like this in the first two GoW games.
