Umm, you couldn't grapple at all in the first two games.
Just sayin'.

So, you don't think it's worth patching the grabbing mechanics when they are completely broken??? I should also add that the auto-targeting problems don't just affect grabs. They also affect combat grapples, Cestus attacks, and item targeting. The combat grapples and grabs always target the largest enemies, regardless of which direction you're pointing the stick. The items (e.g. boots and bow) always targets the smallest enemies, regardless of which direction you're pointing the stick. At least you can use the right stick to choose your target when you use an item. But there's no way to choose your target when you try to grab or grapple: the game choose your target for you, and there's nothing you can do. And sometimes, when using the Cestus, the game won't let you change targets. You'll strike one enemy, and then try to strike a different enemy, but the game makes your attack target the original enemy. It's completely messed up. If anyone hasn't noticed these problems, they're probably a noob who plays on easy and just spams magic attacks without ever needing to explore the full combat mechanics of the game. Speaking of magic attacks, the Nemesis Rage also auto-targets the smallest enemy in the area. Even if you're pointing the stick at a larger enemy. Pathetic.
There are battles in GoW3 where you are fighting grabbable enemies and ungrabbable enemies. Yet the game will NOT let you grab the grabbable enemies if the ungrabbable enemies are nearby. After you get the Claws of Hades and swim to Hephaestus, you fight three Stone Talos and a bunch of Hounds. But you cannot grab the Hounds if there is a Talos nearby. The game will make Kratos grab the Talos, even though the Talos is ungrabbable!
And when you're in Tartarus, there's a fight with two Stone Talos and a bunch of Cursed Remains. Once again, you can't grab the Cursed Remains if the Talos is nearby.
Same goes for the Hades Cerberus Breeder fight. You can't grab a Cerberus Whelp if there's a Satyr or Breeder nearby.
These problems did NOT exist in GoW1 and GoW2. GoW Chains of Olympus also did not have these problems. Only GoW3 is afflicted with these terrible controls.
If you don't think there's a problem, that's because you're not an elite player. Check out my youtube channel. I've got loads of vids of me beating the hardest battles in the GoW series under the hardest restrictions (e.g., Hades Cerberus Breeder, Chaos Mode, no upgrades, no magic, no Rage of Sparta, no subweapons, Blades of Exile only).
