Ok I think I have figured out some of this.
When you put your driver online it is more like a character in an MMO. It is stored on there server. The rewards are stored the same. You saving on your PS3 has no impact on your winnings. It does have an impact if you collect the winnings. Once you collect your winnings then it is data local to your PS3. What I'm assuming is that it does not auto save after this event. This seems to be how winnings are lost. This may also happen if you take a driver offline without collecting winnings. As once it is offline it is local data not on the servers.
This comes from observations and reading peoples faults. Now I could be wrong and I have not tested the theory. My PS3 is always on and 99% of that time on GT5. I only find out about patches when it stops connecting to the server.
I make a habit of always manually saving before I exit the program. I have never lost credits from online B-spec and I would bet I'm doing more of it than most people.
Disclaimer.
I could be totally wrong about the cause.
I figured I would post this again just encase it was missed in the other post.
As an addition anyone who exits any game relying on the auto save is asking for something to go wrong. Auto saves are there to help with long sessions that could be interrupted by power loss or whatever. You should always save any game manually before you exit. If people keep having this problem it is there own stupid fault. I can just imagine them telling there boss that the report they spent the whole night preparing is not done because the auto save did not happen before they exited. (Oh wait my employees use this excuse all the time.) Then I fire them.

Mine is never in server mode but my drivers are shared. This hasn't prevented others from using my drivers. They work the same way as shared cars
If however, I want to use my drivers and friend's drivers to do some remote races, then I would need to set my PS3 to server mode. Hope that makes sense!
