First thoughts on Gran Turismo 5

[ Edited ]

First and fore most, I am stating an opinion, some may feel the same, I half expect a reply like "dont like the game, dont buy" same goes for this message, If you dont like it dont reply.

Anyways, i do love the game, so i will get this out of the way but i am dissapointed for some of the stuff.

First off was the time scale. For the game quality and content it took too bloody long. I have been hyped up for a few years about this but i was dissapointed. Here are my reasons.

Update when released. It took my internet 90 minutes to download the 133mb update. not my network issue as i started a download to test and was very fast. Brand new game with an update??

Half cars take ages to get. Couple of silly cars i want but i have to keep checking the used car dealership to see if i can get one. i cant even get them new from the dealers.

Graphics - I don't see any difference from GT5P but i aint bothered about that. What i am with the quality of some of the cars. An example is the wheels on the G20, looks like 4 black oversized holes on the alloys.

Wheel changes on standard cars - You can not do it. Not even colour them. You could on GT4 on a PS2. I mean *****?? Half the bloody premium cars i am not interested in.

Modifications - I mean what?? where updated brakes? pay a fortune for a performance gearbox and still cant change ratio's on most of the cars??

Mileage on clocks - Small mod but one i liked. I buy a car and it shows in Klms, i prefer Miles, despite miles selected in the menu??

Lotus thing on Top Gear Test Track - Thats bloody pathetic. Someone clips the back end of you and you get D/Q'd. plus the lotus is unhandleable, i never got past hammerhead.

Load times seriously slow....I mean *****???

Other than that i love the game, will provide hours of fun, but for the timescale, i think that PD was seriously dossing. I should have kept the PS2 and GT4, not that much of a difference.

Yeah, but not unsurprising, I've played other games with a day 1 patch. Speed was fine on my broadband though, probably a peak capacity issue.

It is a bit annoying not being able to buy standard cars as new, but I suspect they're being positioned as 2nd class cars for a reason, all new content will be premium. As for taking ages to get - I agree, I had to wait about 12 races before my MG TF appeared. Was the same with GT4 though, not really too much of a pain. At least its not like GT on the PSP where you only get 4 dealerships at a time!

I can only presume this is a graphics engine restriction, because as you say, it was possible on earlier games. I never did it though, bit like car washing.. ***** is that there for, the dirt doesn't stay on the car between races.

Totally agree here, well, on the brakes thing anyway. They're in the settings menu you can get at before a race and mentioned in depth in the Apex book, so I can only assume their AWOL status in the parts shop is a bug. As for the gearbox ratios, you need the fully customisable box.

Mileage on clocks - Small mod but one i liked. I buy a car and it shows in Klms, i prefer Miles, despite miles selected in the menu??

Yup, spotted that one too. It would also be nice to change the Torque figures, you can change from Miles to KM (apart from the screen you mention), but you can't change from kgsqm or whatever it is - it means nothing to most people anyway. lb/f or NM please.

As others have said, try logging out of the PSN before playing. I was on earlier in the day and (although I had done the 8GB install) load times were around 30s per race, not too bad.

I wouldn't go that far. I have no doubt that 75% of what they worked on we never actually see, its all in the core game engine itself, getting the feel of the cars right, tuning the feedback so it works well. The most recent delays I suspect were down to adding 3D support in and upping the premium car count.

As far as I'm concerned, after my 3 hours or so with it, it plays well, it looks great, sounds awesome with the 5.1 surround and has quite a lot of life ahead of it in offline mode.

Online I haven't got a clue about as I haven't ventured out into the wide wilderness of the unwashed masses yet :smileywink:

Re: First thoughts on Gran Turismo 5

As with most of us, I've been wanting to get my hands on this game since getting the PS3 back in 2007.
I find it a bit overwhelming at the moment, so few credits, so many cars.
Also finding long loading times between menus, but if signing out of the PSN will help, I'll give that a go.

So far I've only done 2 entry level kart races, first 2 of the Nascar (I don't like Nascar! I know the Yanks don't like corners, but these cars don't seem to go round bends!!) and I've done 5 of the licences.
Having been CoD for last 3 years, it's a huge change getting back into a car game. In fact I went back to BOps for some relaxing.

What I need is the weekend to play, I plan to book Sunday as a virtual drink driving day and have a few more races, level up, pass more licences and just have a good look through all that my £40 has gotten me.

Ergo: Happy it's finally arrived. I expect this game will give me weeks and weeks of joy, years in fact.

I suspect it will. I never completed GT4 in the end, I ran out of time and then bought the PS3 and never really got on with playing it on the PS3.

But that's the thing, people look at GT5 and go - where's all the time gone into it? The problem is a large amount of the time went into things you don't actually see. The amount of events in the game is good, the special events are a decent wide range of challenges and when they get online sorted out, it should be great online too.

But even without the online section, its still a massive game, to complete in A spec is going to be time consuming enough, let alone in B Spec as well.

Not to mention the fact that they'll be adding new tracks & cars via DLC I don't doubt, probably new events too.

Re: First thoughts on Gran Turismo 5

I really hope that the creator has a good look about the forums and thoughts about the game, there is a few dissapointed customers with the game and we all expected more. I hope he takes it on board and gets these problems sorted via DLC, Apparently there wont be any additional tracks and cars for it, i am sure i saw a blog somewhere that it wasnt going to happen. There isnt that much change on the cars line ups, There seems to be more Honda's and the addition of a load of ferarri's, an example is that i am a Nissan fan, there isnt really any change there, They still have the Primera P10, and the prob most unpoular Primera P12, Where is the P11?? it was a BTCC winner, and was a TE-V model with more power, Where is the Almera GTi that was in GT1? or even the Pulsar VZR or the old Pulsar UK GTiR??

I know there are a lot of cars, but you will be lucky if there are only 5% of the cars people will only want.

Level 18 atm and Im having an absolute blast with the game.

The only thing I worry about is the online portion.

That could use some tweaks.

Agreed, considering it was 5 years in the making, doesn't really strike a WOW factor into it imo
