Gran Turismo HD Concept in 2007

[ Edited ]

Just a quick sum up of what it was then I will make my point (skip to bottom if you already saw it)

This demo was released in 2007 on the Playstation store for free. It was soon after cancelled but everyone got to keep it and it still works to this day.

Gran Turismo HD Concept was a Time Trial and Drift Trial Demo based on the Eiger Nordwand road Track

It consisted of these cars:

Suzuki Cappuccino '95

Mazda Roadster '89

Honda Integra Type R '04

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV GSR '96

Infiniti G35 Coupe '06

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR '05

Lotus Elise 111R '04

Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec II '94

Toyota Celica GT-Four Rally Car '95

Ferrari 599 '06

MY POINT.

This small demo was very advanced in graphics, the crowd are all 3D, the convertible had ripples in the rear window, the paint shows an orange peel effect on some cars just like in real life, the whole of any car was soooo detailed. The cars rocked a lot more if you accelerate and brake hard, The GRASS MOVED when you drove past it, the background was astonishing and finally the sounds were better than Forza 4. BY FAR.

WHY DID POLYPHONY GO BACKWARDS!!!!!!!!! If GT5 had the detail of this demo on all the tracks and cars there would be no need for GT6 7 8 9... Etc.

For those who didn't see the graphics

Well, sounds great, for sure.

The grass still moves when you drive past it, on some tracks (the one you mention actually), but I suppose that is scant consolation, or else you wouldn't have started this topic.

i'm happy with 2d crowd, non moving grass etc... if that means that instead of lonely time trials i get ai opponents etc.

Computers (consoles) have limited resources, finite by definition because we cannot change them. Neither can PD.

When PD hits the limitations wall, then, if they want to improve something else elsewhere, something has to give. That's why we have cutout trees, now, because we got something else.

In other words, you can't have everything.

Where would you put it all?

To be honnest I'd prefer 450 premium cars, no standard cars and graphics like gt HD. There's soo much more for the ps3 to give ps3s got a huge amount of power, look at what some other games have achived and think how much more polyphony can do. All the small things make a huge difference. The background in gt5, the flat grass, lifeless water rock solid cardboard trees. It would all add up

can you name better driving/racing game on ps3? (better driving physics, better ai etc)

edit: i suspect you are not software developer and probably don't have idea about the problems they have to deal with and how easy or hard it all is.

Where in that sentence did I say driving/racing games?

Just look at Grand Theft auto or Red dead redemption, battlefield, Uncharted, Need for speed. Etc.

they all use such big areas with reasonably good graphics. They fit an unbelievable amount into a game.

not to mention the fact that kaz left enough room to make all standard cars premium... So what's all that space doing? Especially since polyphony decided they wont be making any standard cars into premium, they're just going add a few now and then.

Regarding physics GT5 still has many issues, yes it drifts good, accelerates and brakes well but you go over a jump or light bump and the car goes like a cardboard box. I think the best gravitational physics were off burnout paradise.

Bottom line is people keep comparing Xbox and Ps3 when apparently ps3 has a lot more power than Xbox

it seem like theres no ps3 game that fully uses the power of the ps3

Re: Gran Turismo HD Concept in 2007

yeah... software developers would dream that "using 100% power" would be as easy as you think. basically "move power usage slider to 100% and that's all" :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Gran Turismo HD Concept in 2007

Before knocking PD's abilities, wait and see if they satisfy your needs with GT6.

Also, just because a console can do certain things well doesn't mean that there still aren't compromises elsewhere. A very simple example is AA. The higher the screen resolution used, the less AA can be used. That's just the nature of the beast. Apply the same principle to the whole PS3 environment with a large program running on it and maybe PD just can't do everything that you want.
