Last week my PS3 decided to die and refuse to reboot, so I was unable to back up all my saves etc. Would I be correct in saying I now have to start GT5 all over again? or is my data somehow stored online? I've just checked my psn details on the gran-turismo website, and its still showing my licences and game progress, but when I tried the game, i'm back at the very start?
So I guess i'll be starting from scratch?

Unless you saved your progress on PS PLUS or to a mem-stick, then you must start from scratch.

Why not just take out the hard drive from your broken PS3, put it in someone else's then copy all your saves to a USB stick?
won't work. verified. someone else's ps3 only asks "do you want to format hard drive" and that's all.

won't help either.
when you have no backup of your savegame then your only hope is reviving your dead ps3 and hopefully for long enough to back up your save.

Yes, your best bet is to have a pro try to fix the console.
Even better is to find one that will replace the leadless solder with leaded solder, then you won't have as many problems with it.
Most of the pros will successfully reflow the motherboard.
