Recommended GT6 Updating Instructions

It seems that the GT6 updating errors are being caused by players not updating for longer periods of time. Those who keep up with updates seem to have less problems. The following instructions are being recommended to deal with updating errors.

PDI is looking to see if these instructions can be further simplified.

It seems the root cause of this was that players would let significant time lapse between updating GT6. When finally updating, the patches will download/install properly, however there is a file extraction that occurs while on the main menu warning screen. If this file extraction gets too big, the install will fail (after waiting for a very long time).

Steps to address the “Installation Failed” issue:
  1. Backup save data file to PS Plus or USB drive and delete existing save data file from the PS3 prior to update process *
  2. Within the Games tab of the XMB select Game Data Utility
  3. Highlight GT6 Game Data and press the “Triangle" button and select DELETE
  4. While connected to PSN, highlight the GT6 game disc/game file from the XMB
  5. Press the “Triangle” button and select “Check for Updates”
  6. Accept the update prompts and begin patch process via the XMB
  7. Allow the first 6 patches to download and install.
  8. Once the 6th patch has finished installing, press the “Circle” button to cancel the download process
  9. Scroll left while on the XMB, and highlight the Settings Tab
  10. Scroll down to the Network Settings tab>Internet Connection and select DISABLE (this step will prevent the title from trying to complete the remaining TPPS patch process)
  11. Boot GT6 and follow the in-game prompts until the main menu appears.  (this step will create new save data which will later be deleted)
  12. Once the initial in-game installation process is complete, press the “PS” button and Quit the game to return to the XMB
  13. Return to the Settings>Network Settings>Internet Connection screen and select ENABLE
  14. Highlight the GT6 game disc/game file and press the “Triangle” button and “Check for Updates”
  15. Once the first patch has completed it’s download/install process press the “Circle” button to Cancel
  16. Repeat steps 10-15 until all TPPS patches have been installed.
  17. Copy save data from step 1 back to the PS3 system (overwriting any existing save data that may have been created during the update process)

Although fairly complex, this worked every time.

* If you don't have any progress, then you can skip this step

Nice one Mastr.  :Thumbs:

Would I be right in assuming you learnt this through correspondence?

A few things stand out to me:

"While connected to PSN ..."

Updates can be done without signing in, and I would have thought that it would be more reliable to update without being signed in to the PSN.

But perhaps it's just a wording thing that I'm reading wrong and they simply mean connected to the internet anyway.

"Allow the first 6 patches to download and install."

Curious number.

I've never worked out why there is always 1 less update file than the version number.

eg v1.14 has 13 update files.

So does 6 patches get you to v1.06 or v1.07?

Either way, it's an interesting place to nominate where to stop the patches for the first time.

For reference here's a list of the updates according to release notes so far :

v1.01 = 1.2GB

v1.02 = 1.2GB

v1.03 = 99MB

v1.04 = 214MB

v1.05 = 100MB

v1.06 = 295MB

v1.07 = 961MB

v1.08 = 1.4GB

v1.09 = 598MB

v1.10 = 2.1GB

v1.11 = 30MB

v1.12 = 484MB

v1.13 = 9.5MB

v1.14 = 548MB

"Scroll down to the Network Settings tab>Internet Connection and select DISABLE ... "

I was reading of this earlier.

The reasoning behind disconnecting and then later reconnecting from the internet sounds good, and considering it's such a quick and easy step in the scheme of things, definitely worth the few extra seconds each time.

Which of course leads into ...

"Highlight the GT6 game disc/game file and press the “Triangle” button and “Check for Updates”

I seemed this was a better system than doing the updates from in-game anyway.

But with the disconnecting and reconnecting from the internet for each patch, this option is clearly the best way to go.

It's a nice simple description and hopefully can help those having issues.

Will see if we can get this pinned as a sticky.

Yes, PDI ran into the updating problem everyone else found, last week at PSX, so they had the chance to figure it out at the show. They asked to have the instructions spread around while PDI figures out what to do about it now.

The one thing that was becoming obvious but I couldn't be sure about was anyone who kept up-to-date didn't have problems. This wasn't completely obvious when dealing with individuals here and there not knowing if they had let updates lapse or not.

So, for now, keep everything up-to-date.

as a result after step step update from 1 to 1.01 --- 1.09 I need to begin once again

This is a shame nothing done and it is not possible to download a general update because I do not play everyday with the game

GT6 really sucks

This is a really big joke

I would just like to add that I have not tried these instructions yet but the reason I am having trouble updating is not that I didnt keep up to date with the updates it was that my PS3 console stopped working and I had to buy a new one. All the updates from the start have to be loaded but after half an hour it always comes up with the error insalling message. I have not managed to even load the game yet. So 3 consoles and 3 GT6 discs later as advised by different people I am really frustrated. I dont know if your instructions will work yet as you state to read the disc but I cant as as soon as I insert the disc it wants to install the updates.

Hi Sue,

It sounds to me like the game may be auto-starting and immediately looking for updates.

You can switch off the auto-start function with a setting on the XMB.

XMB > Settings > System Settings > Disc Auto-Start.

Turn that function to 'Off' and that should allow you to put the GT6 disc in without it starting the game.

You should then be able to follow the instructions described in the first post of this thread.

It is important that you delete the failed update data from your previous attempts (as described in points 2 and 3 above) before moving forward.

XMB > Game > Game Data Utility > GT6 file (press 'triangle' - Delete)

Once you get up to 1.06, you have to take control.

Which console version do you have?

Yes. I followed all the instruction and from 1.06 on, I updated each patch step-by-step.

I have a 250gb PS3 with the last firmware available: 4.66.

Whent I get to download and install 1.10 it's ok, but when I boot the game and it starts the in-game installation, here it fails...

I did another test:

backup my consolle

format the hard disk

install Gran Turismo 6 on my "fresh" PS3---> it worked without any trick.

....

Now I am restoring back my PS3...

Can you help?

Thank you!

The 250Gb... so that is the original slim model?

That is the main one that, apparently, has the install problem, so the instructions above need to be followed carefully. I have asked PDI if there might be some sort of problem with your set-up, but I am not aware of any other, at this point, other than it being a 250Gb slim.

The instructions above have worked for everyone that PDI is aware of, so I can only think that something wrong is going on at your end. You MUST use the XBM for updating, not the in-game. I'll wait for PDI to reply.

Yes, it's the original slim 250gb model indeed.
well, could you please tell us how did you get in touch with PDI? I was not able to find any contact.. maybe presenting them my case will help to solve the problem... If i can get a solution on my own through them I will post it everywhere in the world :-)
It's not acceptable that having a specific ps3 model prevents me to play gt6...
anyway, do you think that simply change the hard disk capacity could be a workaround? (I will replace the hd in this case)
Obviously I have plenty of free disk space (more than 70 gb... could it be a not enough free space issue?

Thank you for your support!

The instructions came from PDI after they had to deal with the update problem themselves. In their experience, they work for your console as listed, and you are the only person having difficulty. Chances are, then, that the problem is in your application of them.

I have asked them about this on your behalf and that was their suggestion.

Do you have an installed game save at this point?

By 1.09, have you played and created one yet?

Um, why are you launching the game?

This is unusual, so I am wondering if having a progress file at this point will help you install 1.10.

Ok. I didn't write good sorry.. it was late for me :)
Anyway, one of the steps tells to boot the game after the patch installing (this means that i need to do it for each patch from 1.07 to the actual 1.15, as far as I understood).
Do you confirm that's the way to do it?
I will try again ensuring that i hace a proper savegame at 1.09.
Bye!

Just to clarify what I am doing:
1. Delete game data and gamesave (backup the save obviously :) :)
2. Update the game from XMB menu (triangle->check updates)
3. Let go the automatic installation of patches from 1.01 to 1.06 (included)
4. Put consolle offline
5. Run the game and let it complete the installation of the last 1.06 patch.
6. This creates also a savegame (i didn't check honestly)
Now i start to cycle:
A. Put consolle online
B. XMB menu check update
C. Download and install the next patch (starting from 1.07)
D. Cancel the download of the next patch after installation of the previous
E. Put consolle offline
F. Run the game and let complete the in-game installation for this patch

This for each patch from 1.07 to 1.15... the problem is that the in-game installation of 1.10 always fails: i get an "Installation failed" message OR it tells "20 minutes remaining" and standa like this for hours without any hard disk activity led on.

Hope it's more clear now..
thank you for the help!

Ah, yes, step number 11.

Paolo: you are not supposed to let the game update itself from 1.07 onward. You must use the XMB method.

Yes...This is fully clear to me.
But when I install the patches from XMB (download and install.. 1.07 e.g.) it's ok.
Then I do need to run the game after each XMB installation, don't I?
Well, when the game runs (offline obviously), it starts another installation progress (the one I think mentioned on step 12)...
This part goes well until it's installing the 1.10.
If this is the problem, how can I avoid this?
I am sorry to continue disturbing -_-'''
Thanks!!!

Step 11:

  1. Boot GT6 and follow the in-game prompts until the main menu appears.  (this step will create new save data which will later be deleted)

Wait until it does a save after booting, then go to the next stage.

Well. I didn't solve yet the problem

I will really thank you any additional support (I phoned Playstation support which told me I have to pay 115€ to get a repaired consolle....)

When you say:

"Boot GT6 and follow the in-game prompts until the main menu appears.  (this step will create new save data which will later be deleted)"

I do it.

I downloaded and installed from XMB the patch 1.06.

Cancelled the 1.07 download

Put the consolle offline

Run the game.

I get an in-game installation process. When it finishes, I get prompted to enter my Name&surname, then I go in the first tutorial (a lap in a car).

Then I exit this race, go to main menu and chose "Option -> save".

Then I quit the game, put the consolle online and download the next patch from XMB.

I don't touch the save data keeping it where it is.

I do these steps until 1.10 downloaded from XMB and installed.

At this stage, when I run the game, the in-game installation of the 1.10 starts... and never complete :(

If those steps are all ok... well... why I can't play ?? :(

Thank you for your support!
