Re: What's your setup for manual shifting on a DS3?

You'll get used to manual gears. Before too long you'll just be able to hear when to change with very little need to look at the rev counter.

Only a couple of weeks ago I used R2 and L2 for gear changes and the right analogue stick for accelerate/brake. However, I've now changed to R2 an L2 as accelerate/brake with the right analogue stick as gear up/down - much like yourself and others. I've found this set-up is a lot better than my previous one.

Re: What's your setup for manual shifting on a DS3?

OP here - thanks for the feedback. I see several people are using what I have set up for gear changes (right stick up / down) and so far it's working out pretty well - just a matter of getting used to slightly new new hand position. I tried X and Square, but the right toggle is more comfortable for me. I might try those trigger extensions - I can see how they would help with reducing hand fatigue and slipping off L2 and R2.

Knowing when to shift, even by sound alone, is not an issue - been driving real cars for 20+ years and I don't even look at the RPM gauge during a race. It's really a matter of getting your fingers to do all the different things you need at the same time. Gearing down into a turn is hardest I find, to hold the line, apply the brakes, and now also gear down at the right time, especially when you're going down 2+ gears. The extra hand/finger movement of adjusting gears impacts your braking and steering.

Ah well, as some of you said, and as I know from experience - practice is all it takes.

Thanks again for the feedback.

X to go

[] to stop

R1 up gears

L1 down gears

simply can't seem to feather the throttle as well with the triggers, do on most others nowadays, but still prefer the retroness of X & []

Now Playing: Far Cry 3, Battlefield 3, Rocksmith, GT5, F1 2012

Looking Forward To: Grand Theft Auto V, Tourist Trophy 2, Timesplitters 4, Rollcage HD

Depends on the situation but 9.99 times out of 10 it will be;

L2/R2 for gear changing and the sticks for control :smileyhappy:.

Glad to hear that Tidgney! Spent the last week chasing your controller ghost. Was consistently staying within 1 second of you until the final sector where I would loose another second! Not bad though I think considering I've only owned a PS3 for 3 weeks.

I always use the sticks for throttle and brake, and R1 and L1 for gears. Often thought about trying the triggers, wondering if I'm missing out on not being able to throttle and brake at the same time

Re: What's your setup for manual shifting on a DS3?

Analogue sticks to accelerate/brake & steer and shift with L2/R2 :smileywink:

Its the classic way to drive since analogue came about. I hate using the more modern shoulder buttons to accelerate/brake set up, very uncomfortable.
