Re: my thoughts on the G27...

I'm no expert on ball bearings, but is it possible that the balls have lost their original size due to wear? How often do you play GT5 and other racing titles? Might just be a wear and tear issue.

I should think that if the balls have become smaller, it would put extra strain on the retaining clip in the centre of the bearing.

Like I say, I'm no expert, just my opinions. Hope the fix goes well tomorrow! :smileyhappy:

Re: my thoughts on the G27...

The hardness of a bearing ball is very high, so if it breaks down, it usually looks as if it chips parts of itself. It would not wear smoothly / evenly to a smaller size.

If the retainer did its job properly, then the balls should stay in place and the balls wouldn't shift their position, but it seems it doesn't always do that.

Andy: with those metal seals, you should be OK. You should be up and running soon. Please post the complete bearing number, in case someone else needs to do the same repair.

Hiya Gavster,

No, it is definitely not ball bearing or bearing shell wear and tear. When you push the ball bearings back into position the assembly becomes pretty solid with no play evident. My theory is that one of my sons was doing a bit of drifting with it and using one hand to steer as rapidly as possible, lock to lock. That would have put extra sideways strain on the components. He's also got a bit of a temper, but I've not pushed him on that particular theory.

Also, the G27 stock bearing is marked 6910RS and when you look at the spec for that particular bearing on the VXB website it is good for 5300 revs per minute. So there's no way that it could suffer wear and tear, even if you put additional lat and long loads into the equation. Some how, that little black retaining clip just popped out.

MasterGT, the full bearing reference is 6910ZZ and is available from VXB.com and they also refer to it as Part Number Kit7717 and costs $19.95 plus shipping. Here's a link.

6910ZZ

By the way, I posted on the Logitech site about this issue and I got no response from anyone, which I thought was a bit strange. I didn't pitch the post as a compaint, more of a FYI topic. But nobody seemed interested. And no one else here has reported the same problem. So it certainly isn't a common problem. The only other clue to this was the review by a G27 owner on the VXB site......

Re: my thoughts on the G27...

Thanks for the seal designation, and don't worry about not getting a response. The important thing is that you have spread your experience and knowledge to people who, one day, may be very thankful that you did post it here.

Just remember that the ZZ designation is for shields not seals, so you still have to keep their environment clean.

Noted

Anyway, job done. Took me under an hour, and that included putting some rubber blobs on the limit stops. When my G27 goes through the self check it no longer rattles against the stops, which is nice.

If I was asked if I notice the difference between the old bearingand the new I would have to say no. And only time will tell if the new bearing is less likely to pop its retaining ring. I'm hoping it doesn't...

Rubber blobs?

Don't worry about the bearing, just go have some fun again.

most bearings like this are good for thousands of revolutions (ie: miles/KM) so the amount of usage on the G27 is miniscule to what the bearing should be able to do. Also if there is that much wear on them in this short of a period of time.... then they need to be upgraded anyway.

On a side note Andy always remember that anything you buy is supplied by the lowest cost bidder to keep the cost down and the profit margin up, So the bearings that were used are NOT going to be of the highest quality standards. VXB does carry some excellent replacements tho, and I have considered doing this with my DFGT but am also looking at the Fanatec CSR E wheel as a replacement as it will work on both consoles (something I need so that continual teardown and setup for 2 different wheels is eliminated)

Chaps,

I have finally got round to uploading some pictures and a narrative on how to break into your G27. Not for the feint hearted, but fun all the same
