What happened to music?

27 Replies 917 Views Created 19-01-2010

The quality of music today is so much worse than that of yesteryear i mean you only have to look at the brit awards nominees to see.

http://www.brits.co.uk/brits-2010

Too many one hit wonders in that line up, crap songs and awful albums. The only bands that deserve a vote is Muse and Dire straits for the brothers in arms album.

It's especially bad in Britain we can't seem to produce good bands/artists anymore, i firmly believe Muse are the best band to come out of the UK in the last 15 years or so.

What happened to music and when did the talent of song and instruments get replaced by people wearing rags on their heads or baseball caps talking really fast over beat?

It's not down to whoever has the most talent or who's most unique, it's down to the most popular.

I get what you are saying but a lot of the bands/artists there like Friendly Fires, Florence + The Machine, Muse, Bat For Lashes, Kasabian, Ellie Goulding, Marina & The Diamonds, Norah Jones, Seasick Steve and Empire Of The Sun are among my favourites at this moment in time.

Though really important categories like Album of 30 Years and British Single are a joke... I love Coldplay but to say it is among the best of the last 30 years? Come on, be realistic.

I hope La Roux or Lily Allen win the single award, as they stand out. The rest are so similar I'd rather ***** the bed.

I'd love to see the Verve win the album award just because I don't think it's expected but this is the Brits and it normally is so stupid. There are actually a lot of good music there but not exactly evenly spread out.

Best British band of the past decade tbh.

You just have to LOOK for music. Charts and award ceremonies means jack these days.

I agree. All the celebrated music now is just repetitive autotune riddled trash, that i hate with a passion.

I only call music "real music" when the artists write their own material and really put their heart and soul into what they do and have really worked for it. All these so called "RnB artists" are merely spoon fed generic songs from record companies. They dont work hard at all. Esspecially after just winning some reality show and just being given songs to sing for some guaranteed $$$. Because people will buy any old sh*t.

And of course Muse are the greatest UK band in the last decade. Such a great variety of music made by them and all of it written themselves.

The good artists are there but, now more than ever, you have to actually look for them. With the sheer number of artists out there and the myriad of ways for their content to be published the impetous is on the listener to actually look for quality.

This means that the charts and the Brit awards are more redundant than ever, so to use them as an example of the decline of British music is, frankly, ludicrous.

Its not really, There was a time when good bands, and critically aclaimed bands were invited to award ceramonies, top of the pops, and things like that. It gave an indication that the general public liked good music.

Obvioulsy british music has declined or that would still be the case.

People liked blur, madness, aphex twin (his videos actually got mtv air time), david bowie etc

Who do they like now? sugababes or whatever they are called.

True, but that's more down to the dilution of awards ceremonies and TV shows. There are more award ceremonies, more sites dedicated to music journalism, hell, even more radio stations than ever before. The result is that the main institutions, be it the Brit awards, whatever the equivalent of Top of the Pops is these days or radio 1, are no longer under pressure to cover specialist music. There are other places for indie, rock, electronic etc. to be covered, and to be covered much better than they ever have before.

Take the Aphex Twin example you provide. Aphex's highest chart position, with Windowlicker, was only number 16. Come to Daddy only got to 36. That MTV would no longer give air time to Aphex, or artists like him, isn't a reflection that people are no longer buying into that music, because they never really did in any significant number. Instead it's merely a shift in MTVs output and 'brand identity'.

Two further points. Firstly, popular music works in trends. The mid-90s had Britpop, when bands like Blur, Oasis, Suede, the Manics were all getting heavy airplay. The late 90s moved to dance music, trance and house in particular. Even midway through the last decade the big name artists weren't just pop, but acts like the Artic Monkeys, the Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and Kasabian. We're now seeing that shift to female electro-pop artists like Lady Gaga and Florence and the Machine. This isn't indicative of a decline, just a shift in the current trend. As with all the others, it won't last.

Secondly, there has always been a parallel pop fanaticism. Britpop's dominance didn't stop Take That and, afterwards, Robbie Williams from being hugely successful, it was just understood that the two were aimed at different markets. Now that corporate pop has been dressed up as a game show and we're being given constant reminders of its popularity doesn't change that. Rage's recent christmas number 1 should serve as a reminder that the people who dislike Simon Cowell's manufactured output  outnumber those that do. If anything the decline in popular recognition of other genres doesn't show that they are declining but, in fact, that the opposite is true. Those interested in 'good bands' are spread out and not all backing one 'saviour of British music'.

I fail to see the problem.

It appears your just getting old im afraid mate. Nowt wrong with the British music scene just stop looking for pop culture for any answers...it's pop for a reason, Popular Music as a whole has become largely disposable in the 00's, this is largely the Internets fault with it's download culture, No point owning the box art, No real point in actually going out to your Vinyl emporium if you can have the album at home inna sec through a fat pipe with a thumbnail piccy that sits and spins on the Ipod display.....for the kids it's just too easy.

This is why bands like Lemon Jelly et al spend such a long time designing sleeves and Rekkid bags so us thirty somethings have something solid to keep hold of / collect, It's what we think keeps us in touch.... young if you like.

Music is still good, you just have to look for it, all the crap is being pushed upon us harder than ever before.

And there's hope yet, we can all pretty much agree that Muse are a fantastic band (and my personal favourite too) and look at how popular they are, there's hope for people yet :P

The Brits are a bit of a joke. Girls Aloud - The Promise are nominated for song of the last 30 years, and Arctic Monkeys - I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor isn't. Saying that they do always take the mick out of the Brit School kids. I just watch the NME Awards, at least its more of my type of thing.
