Contraption Challenge 13 - Submarine

[ Edited ]

Yes, that's right - the Contraption Challenges are back! :smileyvery-happy: And it's all new and shiny.

In LBP1 we asked you to create all sorts of crazy contraptions over twelve exciting challenges, from amphibious vehicles to wall climbers, from transporters to exterminators. Yet now we have all the super-cool features of LBP2, things are sure to get even more impressive - just take a look at the results from the challenges we held in the beta. We can't wait to see what wacky ideas you all come up with, so without further ado let's bring on the first challenge!

We're starting fairly simple and asking you to make a contraption that can swim underwater. It doesn't have to look like a "typical" submarine; it could be a robotic shark, an underwater car, even a scuba diving rocket cheetah - as long as it swims underwater, the more creative it is the better! Here are the requirements:

  • Sackboy has to be able to enter and exit the contraption out of the water.
  • Sackboy must control it from within the driver's seat - no remote control.
  • It needs to be able to travel in all directions underwater.
  • It should behave differently when not underwater. This could simply just be making it float on the surface so that it isn't able to continue swimming in the air (which would look a bit weird).
  • Nothing else is required. Torpedoes etc. can be added, but it's not what we're asking for, so we'd rather you focus on making the swimming fun and interesting.

  1. To take part, create your contraption and a short level to show it off. This level doesn't need to be very much, just a body of water to swim around in is enough.
  2. Give the level a title with 'CC13' in there somewhere (e.g. "CC13 - My Submarine"). Remember to also give it a nice level icon, some tags and a description.
  3. Publish the level before 23:59 BST on Sunday 17th April 2011.
  4. Post an LBP.me link to your level in this thread to show off your masterpiece.
  5. Search for CC13 (or just click here), queue up some levels and see what everyone else has made!
  6. After the deadline, the MVPs and myself will play all of the levels and begin the difficult task of narrowing them down to just 5 finalists (see judging criteria below).
  7. You'll then have the chance to vote for your favourite finalist - look out for info on how this will work nearer the time.
  8. All of the finalists will be featured in one of Chimpanzee's awesome YouTube videos and on the PlayStation Blog for the world to see, and the winner shall receive eternal fame and glory! No epic prizes this time unfortunately, but plans are in progress for another exciting way to reward the winners, which will be revealed... "soon".

You’ll only be judged on the contraption itself (although good presentation of a level always helps to show it off), and you’ll only be judged on the things we’ve asked for. Here’s everything we take into consideration:

  • Visuals - how good it looks, attention to detail, that sort of thing. Spend time making your contraption look nice; don’t just leave it as a block of cardboard.
  • Ease of use - how intuitive and easy it is to control. Don’t make it unnecessarily complicated and difficult, and explain what the controls are using Magic Mouths, subtitles or Controlinator prompts if it isn't obvious.
  • Innovation - how unique your contraption is and how much is stands out from the crowd. Think outside the box!
  • Interactivity - how fun it is to use. We don't want to sit around and watch stuff control itself, so try and give the player full control.
  • Functionality - whether it does the job it’s supposed to and works properly.

  1. Anyone of any age from anywhere can take part. Yay!
  2. The level must be playable in LittleBigPlanet 2.
  3. The level mode must be set to either standard or versus - not cutscene.
  4. You can only publish one level with one contraption.
  5. You can enter either by yourself or in a team of up to 4 people (in which case only one person should publish the level and list all other team members in the level description). Entering as a team doesn’t let you bypass the “one level” rule either, so you won’t be able to publish a level in a team and on your own.
  6. Levels must be published before the deadline with CC13 in the title.
  7. Edit your level and republish it as much as you like before the deadline, but do not republish after the deadline (at least not until the contest is over). Exceptions may be given for quick fixes such as level title, description, badge or fixing a major level-breaking bug you didn’t notice, but you MUST either post in this thread or send me a PM and wait for me to give you the go ahead. Any levels published or republished after the deadline without permission WILL be disqualified, so don’t do it!
  8. The contraption must be your own creation. Borrowing ideas, using inspiration, recreating things from real life, films, games etc. - all this is fine. Just don’t copy someone else’s creation and claim it as your own!

If you have any questions, post them below or send me a PM. Good luck, and have fun!

Interesting... I came here expecting an April Fools joke, good to see it's true.

We'll see if any cool ideas pop into my head, at the moment I got none.

Re: Contraption Challenge 13 - Submarine

Does it actually have to be water? Or can I just try to simulate water?

We're still organising the prize. We couldn't get it fully finalised before the challenge launched but we'll let everyone know what it is as soon as we can.
