Re: Similar Costume?

I would've thought having your idea picked by MM and turned into the real thing would be something you'd be quite happy about... I don't see what the problem is here.

Re: Similar Costume?

Maybe they were designs that MM had already thought of and had developed and it's a coincidence that they're similar?

As we had no info on upcoming costumes we were pretty much hoping that the designs we picked weren't already in the game in some for or another.  I hardly think they'd bother to rip off designs from this forum's competition.

Re: Similar Costume?

The competition wasn't just on these forums it is an official media molecule comp that was just promoted on this site, the designs went to media molecule. It's not as if they just happened to come across the site and see what people designed. As for being happy my design was chosen, yes I would have been happy but it's like they've taken designs changed them slightly and called them original without saying who inspired them. That for me is a HUGE problem. I accept coincidences happen but until there's proof that media molecule came up with these design first then it's always going to look suspicious.

I reckon that if they're similar by coincidence or copied, it's nice to see that your designs got used or were just the right sort of thing and already in the pipeline. I figure that if your design was the inspiration, it would be cool to have that acknowledged, true, and whether or not that's the case, maybe you should get a free copy of that costume (assuming the rest of us will have to pay) as a well done / no hard feelings kind of thing.

Looking at the designs, don't think anyone could complain that their Motorstorm inspired costume had been ripped off - the helmet is the only similar part and it's the game's iconic image so it's not suprising. The penguin is only really similar in terms of the markings on the face - look at the differences - beak held on with string / bowtie vs. scarf / top hat vs. no top hat - not too similar other than the word "penguin". The shark-on-the-head one is pretty similar, and I'd be up for the argument that it does come across mighty "inspired", but MM have obviously loaned an animal book from the library and are working their way through - zebra, ape, frog, lion, etc. - if I was working on "shark", I reckon I'd be 80% likely to have had it eating the SB's head, it's just funny.

Wish I'd submitted a costume now...

Re: Similar Costume?

This was always going to be a possibility when we ran the costumer competition - releasing new costumes which are similar in theme to ones that were entered. Here's the fact of the matter, the art team who are responsible for designing new original (ie unlicensed) costumes were involved at the very final stage of judging, by which time the number of entries had been whittled down to 10 from each batch of entries (Europe, Japan, USA).

If at any time we take inspiration from a costume competition entry that didn't win overall we will contact the creator directly.

Well It's certainly nice to get an official response! I like your tone( that's PR training for you! ).

It would have been nice to have said.... OK the competition is over here is the winner ( give them credit by NAMING THEM ) and also here is a list of people who created similar designs to the ones we created and as reward for that we will give those people a prize( free costume etc. )

People would have been very HAPPY and not ANGRY or SAD or even FEARFUL of what has happened ( do you see what I've done there !!)

Still It's not too late now is it?
