a dangerous precedent?

i think yes.

if you surrender to this kind of thing then you condemn yourself to being a victim of it forever.

now anybody with an axe to grind against sony knows the perfect way to to make them capitulate without a fight.

what's to stop somebody claiming that something in home or killzone offends their religion.

if anybody has seen the cartoon wars episode of south park you know what i'm talking about.

sony have just done the coporate equivelant  of painting a bullseye on their chest.

Re: a dangerous precedent?

Very true, especially when they favour one religion over any other. Personally, that would fuel wars of Religious Faiths accussing Sony of favouritism, and make the wide canyone that is appearing between Islam and other religions ever wider.

Totally, wrong decision in my eyes, and I think this will only Hurt Sony more, and I hope not Gaming as a whole. Hell, Gaming as a whole has a huge BULLSEYE in the center of it at the moment due to all the criticism about various games and the supposed offensive voilence in them.(I think they forget how depressing and voilent the SOAPS are, because I think more people watch them, than they play games??)

Re: a dangerous precedent?

Why do people have such a hard time understanding the reasoning behind the decision?

The game broke Sony QA guidelines. It is nothing to do with the song, pressure from religious groups, capitulation to one religion over another or anything like that.

Sony's guidelines state that religious material that could be considered offensive is not allowed.

Re: a dangerous precedent?

How about those offended by this religious pandering actually do something productive? I propose a boycott of the first week of sales. But you'd need significant number to agree.

If thats true then Sony really should come out and explain the decision making process so that it is transparent to everyone. I still cannot escape the feeling that Sony were not prepared to pull R:FOM from shelves and change it's content when asked to by the Church of England, yet they were prepared to do it in this case. I'd like to know why, what was the difference between these two instances because on the face of it I see two very similar cases, both instances where people of religious persuations have complained that the content of a game has caused them offence. They did not give in to one groups demands, instead offering an apology. Yet they acquiesced to the other groups demands almost instantly.

I'm not saying Sony aren't right, there may be very big difference between the two cases, but it goes to show how once you give into demands from one group you have then set a dangerous precedent for the future. What happens the next time a game is released and it contains something offensive to any number of religions, they are bound to complain now, how can Sony start saying no to any demanded changes to games after doing it in this instance. Or are we really saying that Islam cannot be allowed to be offended, but any other religion is fair game ? I have a lot of sympathy for Sony in this matter, they probably couldn't win either way, it's just a shame it happened at all.

Still it is only a game at the end of they day, and the delay is not for too long which is good news. The only downside for me is that it is now competing with the release of Fallout 3, and Fallout 3 wins hands down for me, still I'll still get LBP when I'm done with Fallout.

Re: a dangerous precedent?

Surely this game can NEVER be released then.

People can make their own levels, and therefore anything religious could be used at some point.

In the game screenshots I have seen they have levels with Indian Gods in, never heard of anyone complaining about the use of religious iconography in these cases.

Silly move by Sony as what could have been cleared up without many people noticing via a patch, and if they had sent vouchers to all stores for a free downloadable feature, then I'm sure EVERYONE with the game would have gone online and had the patch installed without realising.

Instead they have caused a massive stink, did the RFOM debacle improve sales or something?, it's the only reason I can see to pull a game because of a single persons, single(and first I hasten to add) post on a forum, even with the following posts from Muslims saying they didn't know what he was on about !

How is this game going to ever get a release, they surely now need to take out all the music, all the levels with the cross in them, all the levels with trees in, incase the environmentalists get offended, all the levels with fire in, incase it gives arsonists any ideas.

I am being flippant I know, but in reality you can see that if you start pandering to everybodys quirks, then you would never do anything.

Dropped the ball again Sony, I feel truly sorry for the guys at Media Molecule now, I bet they wish this was a 360 exclusive

Re: a dangerous precedent?

The Church of England thing was worse. But, of course, no patches etc.

I saw a Crucifix with a skeleton attached in the LBP OPM review. Can that be removed, please? Or is that fair game?

I practice no religion and do not believe in any of them. That being said, giving one religion precedence over another is shocking, shame on you Sony. A very bad decision and my confidence in Sony as a company has been somewhat lessened

Oh, and I believe this is going to happen again

Re: a dangerous precedent?

[ Edited ]

I see this becoming a huge problem. Before I start I must maintain that I support multi cultured society totally......but.....this is...well....scary !!

As frustrating as it is, Sony do not have a choice. I am not stirring up racial / religon hated when I say the next part, I am recounting fact......Sony must remove the so called offensive nature content as there will be a concern over their product, company, people, distributors and customers (us) becoming the target of extreme action, possibly including threats or actions of violence and death. What the hell do they do?...they are knackered.

Something that has been percieved as the epitomy of everything cute, innocent and childfriendly has been sucked in to a row over religon.

But the parallels drawn with the church issue when they took Sony to rights over the church content in RFOM but Sony dug their heels in just highlights the enormity of the growing problem that the tip toe approach towards "certain" religons is having. The problem is that this action will just drive a wedge between the tolerant approach everyone was trying to take, you now have a growing mass of young people being thrust in to this conflict with the majority, I am sure, taking issue with the source of the complaint which will just increase their intolerance of the muslim ways.

I am sure a vast majority of the Muslim population would also be concerned about this which will make it even harder for them as well.

A stand must be taken...this political correctness has to be stamped out and anyone in our society must realise that nothing must be allowed to be protected from freedom to express, critisicm or even mockery.... but will it ever....???

In some ways I really hope this blows up (no pun intended) big time...it might just make people stop and realise.

A sad day indeed !!

PS...I type this under an alt acount...not to hide behind annonimity but to keep my clan out of this.
