Tactical Espionage Action - The FAQ

[ Edited ]

Hey People,

Metal Gear Solid: Notoriously hard to "get into".

We're going to help matters with this super-awesome sneaking FAQ. Your mission is to locate questions posted across the MGS board which relate to epic sneaking skills. From Plugging in Metal Gear Online to clearing out bodies with the Fulton Recovery System in MGS Peace Walker - whatever your sneaking tips: post them in here.

We'll turn it into an FAQ in a few weeks time and post it for the sake of our newbies.

To post a tip - use this layout (copy and paste for quickness)

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker: Empty magasines are your friend!

Eeek! There's a sniper out there and you know it. The only problem is you cant see where the hell it is.

Take out an empty magasine and chuck it into the space you want to walk into. Once it lands, anyone who is within hearing or visual range will perk up and wonder what it is - exposing them to your sight and giving you the opportunity to tranq them in the face.

Alternatively, use them as a distraction. If someone is walking your way and is inevitably going to spot you, quickly chuck an empty mag behind them. Once they turn around in confusion - leg it!

Get involved: this should help attract more players to the board :smileyhappy:

Re: Tactical Espionage Action - The FAQ

Other than Ac!d, Peace Walker is the only MGS game I've played so I'm not that clued up, but something I've found useful:

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker: Analyze that!

When an enemy is unconcious/asleep, whip out your analyzer to check if they're worth using a balloon on. It'll tell you what their best skill is and what grade they've got in it.
If they're decent send 'em up, up and away. If they're useless, leave their unconcious arse behind and go about your business.
It comes in handy when you haven't got many Fulton Recovery balloons, you don't end up wasting one on someone who turns out to be crap.

Re: Tactical Espionage Action - The FAQ

Ah! this looks nice, I don't wanna search the forum for all the walkthrough threads so I'll just tell people my best sneaking tricks.

Wall Knock
When there is a medium sized obstacle between you and an enemy, simply knock on it once, now follow with our camera buttons which way the guard goes to investigate. Now YOU go round the other way and sneak up behind him. You can take him down or hold him up from there, remember to slow down the closer you get so he doesn't her you and turn.

Distraction 01
You can will an enemy to turn his back all you want, but it won't work. Throw an empty magasine over his head and when he hears it hit he'll turn round to see what it was. Do what you will with this now distracted guard.

Distraction 02
Knock an enemy unconcious who is in the path of another, (but not while he is facing him or you'll get "We're under attack!!!" ) when he runs to wake his friend up you can knock him out too if you're quick enough.

Helmets
In peacewalker some soldiers wear helmets, if you're inclined to try for headshots these guards will give you grief and call for backup. Instead, shoot 2, sometimes 3 quick body shots with the tranq gun and he'll pass out before he even knows wat happened. Be sure to HIT him though because bullets/darts hitthing a nearby wall usually gets you a CAUTION phase, or ALERT if you're close enough to be seen when he turns around.

Camo Index
Before you enter a mission you can see a rough template for what the level will look like behind the mission description text. Use this to pick the best camo.

Stay Low and shurrup :smileytongue:
You may aswell shoot yourself in the face if you're gonna run around stood up. If your feeling ballsy enough to treat MGS like a mindless shooter expect low grades and remember to take lots of ammo for all the back up that will be after you. My advice is save your rambo impressions for boss fights.

Just remember to look around
It might look safe to advance, and corner peeking may be the realistic way to check but instead make use of the camera... poke it round corners and such. David Hayter once commented on the 3D camera system in MGS4 saying it gave the illusion that snake has a "6th sense" for danger. So bare this in mind and use it like a 6th sense :smileyhappy:

The Box
The Cardboard Box works on the principal of camoflaging your shape. The guards will be looking for a humanoid intruder, so they'll be quick to ignore a box normally. Ofcorse a running box stands out even more than a clumsy intruder, so stay still when an enemy is facing you or you'll just look stupid. Imagine being caught under a box ¬___¬ embarrasing. In Peacewalker you can leave a box behind and run off, guards will give into curiosity and go see what it is, use this to evade or take them out.

Thats it, all I can think of now.

Hiding spots
Before doing anything to guards in a mission, make sure you have a place to hide in case you alert the guards by misplacing a shot. Nothings worse than advancing through half the level only to get killed due to dodgy aiming. Cardboard boxes and vents are great places to hide.
