Ideas to improve the racing experience

So there has been (in my opinion) a lot of discussion/complaining regarding ways to improve the non-racing aspects of the game - combat system, create/share system, server issues, added features, glitches, etc - and very little talk about the core feature of this game, racing.  I have my ideas about how I think the racing could be improved, and I'd like to hear yours as well.

 

1.  Customizable race controls - I personally wouldn't change much; probably just switch the shield and brake buttons.  But I'm sure that others would switch things up quite a bit more to suit their driving style.

 

2.  Customizable HUD - I'd like to turn off the drift/air time point tallies that hog the middle of the screen and block my view of the track.  Other folks may find it desirable to be able to toggle the mini maps on and off.  People make such creative tracks, it's unfortunate that the (IMO) busy HUD hinders the view sometimes.

 

3.  Reduction in the speed "penalty" when transitioning from a drift to driving straight - As it is right now, you have two options: snake or lose a ton of speed.  While the current system certainly has played out to my benefit, I think it would go a long way to leveling the playing field if the non-snaking players weren't penalized so severely for releasing their drift.

 

Let me know what you think about my ideas, and feel free to share your own.  I may add more of my own if I think of more.

for the drift to a straight thing, are you pressing the jump button again as you're exiting the drift to 'regain' control?  This is one of the tips that occassionally shows up on the loading screens.  I didn't even know about it until I finally saw it, and noticed the loss of speed seems to be non existant if you do this regularly as you're coming out of a drift.

 

I'd like for one of the buttons on the controller when held down to make my kart and mod temporarily transparent so I can see what's directly in front of me without my fat head and car body getting in the way.  Preferably R1, since right now holding that down does nothing.  Just pressing it attempts to shoot a mod bot or trigger, and if there's none of those around, this button does nothing.

I think I tried that a couple of times after seeing the tip and didn't have much success controlling my kart period, much less regaining control.  I perfected the "post-drift hop" technique in Mario Kart, so perhaps I had some preconceived notions regarding how it was supposed to work here.  I'll give it another go to see if I can make something work.  Thanks for the tip.

Customizable controls.  I've been mentioning this since the beta.

 

With this game being so much about customizing, having no custom control layout is just stupid.
