Does either one unlock items faster?

Career is the only place you can unlock parts.

Like Rawr said, Career is the main area to unlock items, and the PlayStation store has a few optional items for sale.

                                   But in case you don't know, there are 2 ways to unlock items on Career Mode.

1) On career mode, collect 5 tokens per track and go to vending machine area and trade in tokens for parts

     This is the easiest way to unlock things because the tokens are relatively easy to collect on each track and trade in.

2) The majority of items are unlocked by completing Career Mode Race Objectives.  For each Objective completed you

     unlock approximately 3 to 5 items.
