New Track: Italy-The Grand Canal (Race 2 of the ATVT)

So, after many weeks of competition track creating, I have finally managed to finish my next solo non-competition track. Many of you will remember that I made a track called MnR Rally-Croatia, but then changed it to Croatia-Paklenica Park. What some of you may not know, is that I then claimed it to be Race 1 in the ATVT (All-Terrain Veichle Tour), races which include dirt, paved, and water driving. So this next race is now Race 2 in the series. Most of the races will be with outstanding scenery, or natural theming, but every once in a while, there will be the odd urban race. Race 2 is one of these. The good news: You will be racing on streets, with no dirt sections! The bad news: Half those streets are covered in water and littered with gondolas. That's right people, Race 2 is in the ancient sinking Italien town of Venice!

 

(Note: Cleverly thought-of name to avoid IP issues)

I leave you with a picture of the detailed rialto bridge, that was a pain to make. Also, take note that I used the Dump Truck to re-create the drive on water work-around on a large scale, and the yellow edges you see here are barely noticeable whilst racing, unless you are looking out for them.

     This track was a mental challenge for me to create, as, as many of you know, I love my trees and shrubbery. Unfortunately, Venice does not have many, so I have had to restrict myself to potted trees in squares, and a small park at the edge of the grand canal. But hopefully, everyone will enjoy this, and certainly be left thinking; "Eh? Where's the finish?"!

Hey mac, first off, very cool looking track, you did a great job with the aesthetics on this one, it really does feel like that sinking city! Also, those were dump trucks you used for the driving on water glitch? Interesting, I could see the yellow beneath the water and thought they looked odd to be lorries...

 

Anyway, I raced this one last night and, unfortunately, it's still in BETA mode as far as I'm concerned. There are a fair few reset issues and the dump truck props behave very oddly. As the most extreme example, last night I was going around a corner being chased by level 3 hydra's. The first one blew me up. I got reset, at what can only be described as an 'awkward' angle (front, right side of my kart nose was stuck in the ground, could only drive sideways) and even when I pressed select I continued being reset at the same odd angle. To compound the hilarity, those level 3 hydra's were constantly circling around me like a swarm of angry sharks baying for blood. I continued with the repeat exploding for about a lap (other people were lapping me) after which time the rockets suddenly disintegrated and, without pressing anything on the pad, my kart started bunny-hopping backwards for about 10 seconds before finally exploding. Then, and only then, did it reset me on a piece of actual track and I could continue what little of the race was left.

 

That's just one example of reset issues this track has. I never knew the dump truck could be used for this effect but unfortunately, it seems to have more extreme versions of the reset glitches encountered when driving on blocks. :smileysad: How to fix? Not sure, perhaps it would have been wiser to use 'Trailer 1' for the driving on water section? I know it has those sunroof bits but you know it works very well without causing these issues.

 

All that said though, I hope you can fix this track up as it can be awesome if it races properly. :smileyhappy:

 

Finally, off-topic, your prob_alex challenge track was AWESOME, great job! :smileyhappy:

 I was afraid to use trailer 1 ath, as you can't get enough width out of it, even though it's the biggest. Anyway, I didn't get that problem, so keep trying, and let me know if it happens again.

I was in tha same room with ath. I got shot down by a hydra at one point and waited around 20 seconds to be reset, only to be placed about half a lap ahead. This happened nearly every lap; I never got a clean reset.

John got this problem in his venice track, and argo posted his solution... I'll see if I can find it. Anyway, the best way to do this is to have regular 'land hops' that go back onto the track (even if you don't have to take them if you don't get blown up :smileywink:). You can reset on these and they don't have to be very long. Unfortunately there are problems with using the driving on water glitch for long periods of time. I think too many people over estimate it's ability. It's perfect for a short cool effect that makes it look like you are on deep water (big hermitage, wu xing water shrine, ect.) but for the whole track it just causes problems. When I finally get my music track up this week, you will see how the trailers can be used well... :smileyhappy:

It really wasn't a Venice-style track. It was a Far Eastern canal, basically, but you're right... I did have some difficulty with the driving on water technique somewhat on my Leiyu Canal System track... Haven't touched it in quite a while now...   :Shame:

When people will stop making milions of Venice Style tracks i'll be glad to give this a fair look.

Looks good though, i wished more styles could go along Italy, Florence is a nice sample, or Napoli.

 

And sorry for the acid comment but this is the truth...

I have to agree, I have tried to make a Florence track but I found it was too hard to capture the gentle hills. Pictures of countryside Florence are so beautiful, but I couldn't capture that beauty in my track. That failed idea actually transformed into Nurfield Speedway, set in southern Switzerland... but you could never guess that. :smileyhappy: As for Napoli, lets just say I've just started making one lol, but 2000 years back.... :smileyvery-happy:

Okay, This track has been revamped and republished with new re-spawn points along the canals. Go try it out! Also, thanks to everyone who helped with the comments on the alpha version.
