Frame-rate

Hi guys, for the most part I am loving the game and trying to recommend it to friends. I went back and downloaded so many(!) tracks and most of them are fantastic (the community selection ones Mark picks out) - except for deep psyche distortion which is riddled with bugs for me, having me and the AI stuck in this weird tower thing for about 10 minutes trying to find a way through...anyway!

On-topic:

Having such an awesome content-filled game is great and having the developers work on the online mode is also awesome

EXCEPT that the frame-ratey is abysmal and they are completely ignoring it - no annoucements to fix no replies to comments on blogs that mention the problem (every blog that mentions modnationracers road trip).

Every review I have read even mentions the problem:

I could go on but that should be pretty conclusive that the problem with the game exists.

Chances are if anyone reads websites and reviews, they know the problem exists. This is why the silence from modnation devs worrys me. Why not address it if everyone already knows, it's not like it will be new information to anyone, and the mere annoucement that a fix is on the way will encourage people to buy the game.

It should be obvious now that it is a significant issue and severely takes away enjoyment from an otherwise mostly brilliant and a flagship karting game (imo). I understand developers can't be expected to reach 60 fps in every game, especially with how much detail is in the modnation maps and effects HOWEVER when it CLEARLY cannot manage a solid 30 fps (without any extra heavy action) and then proceeds to dip into the teens and low 20s then it is something that deserves to be addressed. The fact that it has been completely ignored is very worrying as I'm sure people are holding out for a fix. Yes online mode and shorter loading times and amazing content is all very well, but when the game has such a glaring problem, perhaps working to fix it (OR AT LEAST announce intentions to do so) before promising to add new content would be reasonable and decent.

Posting this here because these are the official forums, perhaps we have a chance of getting some sort of response to the issue, like whether they even consider there to be one. I am geniuenly sorry for sounding bitter, but trailing the internet for (a response on the topic) information unsuccessfully can do that to you.

Re: Frame-rate

*Sorry the joystick review links to the PS3 game which they mention has  a rock steady-framerate. Only the beta had issues which was in the comments and came up on my search.

I will replace it with another one and a quote from it:

Other than those little niggles in the race objectives and track obstacles the game plays as a simple racer nicely, and the only thing really holding back this game is the terrible framerate at which the Vita runs the game. At times it’s nigh impossible to actually see what’s going on because the game is rendering frames incredibly slowly. Even when there is not much going on in the race, the framerate still struggles to keep up with the game’s speed.

Thank you for reading and sorry to double post.

Re: Frame-rate

The only time my frame rate drops noticeably is when I am directly behind other racers and their 'dust' just kills my FPS. Otherwise, it is an issue that should be addressed!

Yes, I've also noticed the greatest frame drops are when dust or smoke (from karts or projectoryweapon trails) are in view.

Without those effects the choppyness is still noticeable (that it isn't quite running at a steady 30). I know I downloaded a lot of custom content but this also applies to the default maps - 25ish fps. It's not bad, but really the game isn't exactly casual, a lot of controls (btw a way to fire using the rear touchpad would be so good, triangle is hard to reach when drifting! Also having tons of fun with control option 7 with the left and right triggers for directional drifting. You can boost to get out of an oversteer and brake while drifting easily without letting go of acceleration which would otherwise slow you more than tapping brakes while accelerating)....anyway it's not casual so the default rate could be improved as well as the dips imo!

Convinced a friend to pick it up - though he wasn't too pleased at first, I showed him the awesome game mechanics and managed to win him over after playing through a bunch of maps that I had downloaded and said they were free. So many re-playable fun tracks really adds a lot of weight to the game's advantages. Frame rate, online, load times, menu (delay and the wheel's size being difficult to control easily)... hehe a lot of work but they are the known drawbacks that people are passionate about as the game is so good otherwise.

Random extra feedback if you thought why the hell not let's do it all:

*Ability to create custom tournaments (using the downloaded maps as well).

*Ability to use custom character mods as AI players in these tournamets

I imagine online mode would take a lot of work to patch in due to the issue with other players not having custom content so a download system required on top of all the other lobbying and servers issues to implement...but in the mean time those other modes would really maximise the uses of the custom content as well as making the game that much more modable and definately add to the fun.

And I agree in that Online head-to-head is a luxory mode (for many others since it is handheld) which I would use every now and then but an option which I would very much like to have. Most of the time when I'm on the go, SP will be what I play though.

Re: Frame-rate

Just wanted to make a small note as well - the shadows! They are so good, perhaps too good? There are so many items and objects in a typical map and with such crisp shadows being calculated it is surely the reason for the fps drop! Perhaps there is a way to turn down the shadow resolution or some other related setting slightly?

Also that track of the week, Ciudad de la Paz by atheistsw is brilliant. Really glad we can race ps3 tracks on the vita as well.

Re: Frame-rate

Hi Yasir,

I've been looking all over the net to find answers and to look for announced patches to the problems regarding MNR:RT and found your post here on the community site. The drops and overall framerate is a major issue to the game that mostly ruins it all. It seems that there is a difference between playing the game through download from PSN and the physical Vita card, as the downloaded version on memory card has lesser framerate issues. Although I can't confirm this because I only have the physical vita card.

But the framerate isn't the only issue. Also the menu is laggy as you swipe your way through it the screen just stutters. The touchscreen is often unresponsive, especially in the corners of the screen, when modding this is very annoying.

I've been spending a lot of time on MNR:RT so far and the concept of the game is awesome but this one feels rushed in development, clearly not tested properly and poorly executed.

There is also the grade of difficulty that is just insane. The first 2 tours are rather easy but after that it just gets freaking hard and when you have the framerate issue on top of that, it's just unplayable.

It's just sad that the issues with this game don't end with the above comments. The loading times are painfully long and even the colorful screens don't even run smooth when booting the game.

As I said, I came to the community site to get some answers. And as you said, no response or whatsoever from the DEVS.

That's what's called crappy support. And that's too bad because MNR:RT could have been THE best karting game for the Vita.

SO DEVS, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO TO MAKE THIS GAME OUR MONEY WORTH????
