Reality Fighters

Sony (Novarama)

From Novarama, the developers behind PSP augmented reality series Invizimals, comes a new augmented reality fighting game for all those people who think that the Vita’s other beat ’em ups just aren’t daft enough. Using the system’s cameras, the game is able to present the fighters to you as if they were right in front of you, with or without an AR marker, whether that’s on the kitchen table, in the supermarket aisles or towering over buildings like giants – depending on your current viewpoint.

The key feature of this game is bound to be the ability to create your own fighter. Use the camera to a picture of your face, refine it with a few marker points, select a body and costume, record some sound effects and pick a fighting style, and soon you’ll have your own unique fighter ready to take on all challengers. Where I think the game will have longevity will be where people are willing to get elbow deep into this creative side. Why stop at your own face? Dogs’ and babies’ faces are always hilarious in such games. And finally you can find out who would win that pitched brawl between Kirk and Picard...

A recent blog post indicated that you would get The Karate Kid’s Mr Miyagi as your sensei, ready to guide you through the creative process, instruct you in your fighting style and evenutally to provide your toughest challenge. Mysteriously, the blog post has since been pulled from the website, so maybe Mr Miyagi had a change of heart, but whatever happens, it’s indicative of a full single-player experience with a sense of progression. With loads of costumes, wacky weapons, daft fighting styles, built-in arenas and the ability to create your own backdrops to share with friends, it certainly packs a lot in. Let’s just hope the actual gameplay is as engaging.

Ok... Who's actually that excited about Augumented reality?
(Wish you could create polls in this forum).

Sure it looks fun for 5 minutes but longitivity, I'd say gimmicky

Re: Countdown to the PS Vita

I fall into the whole 'short-lived gimmick' camp. I'm not convinced by these Augmented Reality Games. But Reality Fighters will allow you to play against one of a number of built-in backdrops or allow you to make your own backdrops, so it doesn't force you to go out and play on tall buildings or whatever.

As a technology, or for the particular titles announced for the PS Vita so far?

I love the tech demos of AR when people wear head gear while visiting old ruins, and the guide can by the flick of a switch let the tourists see what archeologists think it might have looked like before it ... well, turned into ruins.

And I like simpler form of AR like the one used in Start the Party.

From what I've seen with regards to the PS Vita, I don't care much either way. I'll definitely try it, because AR is interesting from a technical perspective, but do I think it'll increase the level of fun? I don't think so. That said, I doubt it'll make anything less fun.

Me too even though I've never really played them properly on PlayStation.  The only thing that puts me off is that it's 2011!

It has potential, but reality fighters looks a bit like a gimmick to me
