Online play of PSP games

I know that Sony did release the statement that one could play locally with a Vita and a PlayStation Portable. However, I have yet to find a concrete answer to the question of whether a PSP game works online whilst playing it from a Vita. For example, can I play SOCOM online, not local, after having bought it from the PlayStation Store.

PS Vita owner since 1st April.

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?
