Re: 3G or not 3G Vita?

Well in the end I went for the 3G & I love it!

At home I'm not in a 3G area so I use my wifi.....but at work, college or anywhere else I'm 3G which keeps me connected - so I'm very happy :smileyvery-happy:

Re: 3G or not 3G Vita?

The 3G is essential for Near, theres probably a few game goods I wouldn't have gotten if I had WiFi only.

That said I probably wont use it for a while once my first month with Vodafone is up.  You would have to use it a lot to be worth £5/month.  Its good to have the option though for if/when I need it.

Re: 3G or not 3G Vita?

Ive got a 3g model, one of about 6 that arrived in my local game :smileyvery-happy: lol! And i gotta admit, im loving having the additional features, yes theres no killer app atm, but as soon as there is :smileyvery-happy: and as stated for the extra items dropping out of near, things like ridge racer challenges and wipeout ghosts randomly downloading to my vita, love the challenge

The thing is, if you want to just leave Near to do its stuff - using your phone is not an option.

Name one phone that you could leave WiFi tethering enabled on without the battery being dead in a few hours?  However leaving 3G enabled on the Vita even if it DID drain the battery, means I can still use my phone when I need it.

To me extending the battery of my phone is by far the most important thing to do.  There is no point having a phone if when you actually need to make/receive a phone call the battery has run out.

The only advantage to tethering using your phone is that you do not run into that stupid restriction of only being able to download max 25MB files from Playstation Store.  I wouldn't include the ability to play online games as an advantage because the ping times are going to be dreadful.

Agreed, wifi tethering on most phones is pretty annoying anyway, and also like you say i just leave near open, turn off the screen, let it do its thing in the background as im walking with in my back, it automatically uploads my position regularly and i tend to find its already got stuff to download, no smartphone can do that

Re: 3G or not 3G Vita?

Although it doesn't help my phone is an LG and their firmware is so screwed up my WiFi tethering stopped working.

I was surprised with Near, the documentation seems to imply it updates only once a day but it seems that it detects if you have actually traveled anywhere and updates more often if you have.  I didn't see any mention of that in the online documentation.

Re: 3G or not 3G Vita?

I didn't buy a Vita for NEAR. So using tethering from my phone is perfect for what I use it online for (checking messages/friends etc). I saved a crap load of money by just getting the WiFi version

Re: 3G or not 3G Vita?

Near really isn't worth the extra cost and it works on WIFI anyway lol.

What Macron said before.. 3G on a smartphone, wifi hotspot on smartphone... connect PS Vita on it and your done ;D

And my 3G is fast on my phone so when using the Vita to connect to my phones wifi hotspot i the first time I tried i was really surpised how fast it loaded up the Friends app.
