Re: A PSP Game A Day Until Vita Comes Out

[ Edited ]

Maybe it'll hang around all day so that someone who can't access the internet, or maybe the games and social sites, at work will be able to log on in the evening and claim it...

Not that I'm complaining or anything...

Well, I kind of am, but half-heartedly.

Actually, not that bothered, but some people might be.

Damn, I'm turning into an old codger. :smileysad:

[Y'know, as someone who doesn't have access to the forums when at work, these ad hoc competitions during the working day seem a little unfair. But it's not as if I want the game, so what am I complaining for? :smileytongue: ]

Re: A PSP Game A Day Until Vita Comes Out

Basically I need 2 correct answers by tomorrow morning. If I get 2 correct answers today I can announce the winner before. But say BAZ is correct and no one else gets it, I will announce it tomorrow before posting my next write up.

Re: A PSP Game A Day Until Vita Comes Out

Powerstone.JPG

The game I played yesterday was Power Stone Collection!

I think this collection is from 2006.  It's a game I picked up from the sales shortly after it was released so it was still relatively cheap.

The games included in the collection are Power Stone and Power Stone 2.  Known famously as Dreamcast games, they started life as arcade games, like a lot of Dreamcast games to be honest.  This was around the time where home technology had pretty much caught up with arcades and you could essentially get accurate ports thanks to both platforms using similar technology.

The games are essentially brawlers, imagine the versus mode from Streets of Rage with power ups (weapons) and energy and all the rest, except you can truely fight in 3D (in other words you can attack up and down as well as side to side.

The game runs a lot smoother than that video leads you to believe, due to the age of the source material, the PSP can run the game no bother and the fact that it practically has the same control set up as a Dreamcast helps out no end.  For me though I feel that, particularly in Power Stone 2 where you can have 4 fighters on the one screen, it can be a little hard to really concentrate on your character and what he or she is doing at all the time.

Back in 2006 the game was marked down for not including online play instead going for local multiplayer only.  Basically the same as the Dreamcast but of course you need a friend with a PSP and a copy of the game too and despite me knowing loads of people with PSPs and the game being real cheap on the PS Store, it's still hard to convince people to get the game as it is a bit retro.

I got on well with it through out the day on my own though, played in all the usual spots and occasions, I played both games at least once.  Pretty tricky though.

The game I'm playing today is the legendary Lumines!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Win a copy of Soulcalibur Broken Destiny!

Because I don't have an extra copy of the Power Stone Collection to giveaway, I thought I would give away a copy of another fighting game which I have been playing a lot of lately.  It's not in my UMD bag because the game was already in my PSP when I started this campaign.  It's one of my go-to PSP games because it is so suited for portable playing, plus as far as the fighting goes, it is the most up to dat eversion of Soulcalibur, apart from Soulcalibur 5 of course, basically it's part 4 without the Star Wars characters.

Ok to win this game tell me the following:

Kratos appears in Broken Destiny, as you can tell from the artwork, but name the other character who made his first appearence in Broken Destiny.

The first person to give me the correct answer in here wins!

Re: A PSP Game A Day Until Vita Comes Out

Lumines.JPG

The game I played yesterday was Lumines!

I realise that as we get closer to Vita, the amount of conversation regarding PSP games will whittle down a little, particularly in this odd thread I do where I seem to double post a lot and you guys only seem to comment when you're trying to win something.  I'm out of the office again today so I will hold off from holding another competition, I still have a couple of prizes to send off too.  Last time I had access to the inbox the SOCOM winners still hadn't contacted me.  I will get you guys sorted tomorrow.

So what can be said about Lumines?  That's what I want you guys to talk about as I feel I'm doing all of the talking here :smileytongue:  WHat I will say is that this game was a launch title for the PS in all regions, As you can see from the picture, I have the American version, my Dad got it for me when he was over there, I had a Japanese PSP at the time (The 2000 model in the OP is a UK one).  And I've never really "got" Lumines, I seem to get overwhelmed a lot when the game starts to speed up and then slow down again, then the timeline starts to move at different speeds.  It's real addictive though and the music IS top notch.

Which leads me to ask, is anyone picking up up Electronic Symphony?  The games producer James Mielke from Q Entertainment has dropped by the blog a couple of times to discuss the game, so go and check those posts out.

And why not share your experiences of the classic puzzler that is Lumines?

The game I'm playing today is Dead Head Fred!

Loved that game, have the new one ordered - and really looking forward to trying it out! Could never make some of the shapes in that puzzle mode though. It was brutal.
