Re: Another youtube question.

Re: Another youtube question.

The Downloaders you see use a Server script which prepares a Video to be downloaded as an MP4 or other format. That's why it only works for videos and not flash games. (This is also why the quality is worse using these apps as the video is hugely compressed to keep bandwidth costs down)

Flash games are soon to be a thing of the past anyway, don't miss them :smileytongue:

Re: Another youtube question.

Not true, they merely extract the URL for the source video files which are EXACTLY the same files the flash player would use.  The quality is identical.

The only reason the quality "might" be different is that the 480p MP4 is probably not as high quality as the highest FLV version.  The 720p link however will be identical to playing that YouTube video in 720p on ANY device which supports it.

The other possibility is that it might appear worse due to the Vita screen being clearer, with a much higher contrast ratio than an LCD.  So it will show up the flaws and compression more clearly than an LCD screen would.

Nothing really. Video, music and pictures are the only things the browser can download

Spot on.

There is in fact no 480p YouTube MP4 video feed and the Vita downloader people are using (i.e. not mine) actually uses the 360p video stream (YT format 18). The guy that created the bookmarklet perhaps got the idea from PS3YouTube, which also incorrectly lists a 480p download option.

There is a 480p YouTube FLV video feed (Format 35), which is no good for downloading on Vita or PS3 as the consoles don't support it directly (without a Flash player, as on PS3, within browser). This is the format PS3YouTube uses for streaming videos (unless you pony up the $5 for 720p (Format 22, an MP4 feed)).

In answer to the OP's last question, as long as a site specifies the address of an MP4 video feed within the page (as opposed to FLV feed etc), it may well be possible to offer a download option.
