Download YouTube Videos

[ Edited ]

For any Vita owner who wants to watch YouTube videos via HTML 5 or an app, I thought you might like the ability to at least download YouTube videos!

NOTE: I've only tested the bookmarklet on my PS3 (I don't have a Vita), but as the browser is likely the same as the PS3's, there's a good chance it will work (I've allowed for the fact the Vita doesn't presently have a clipboard).

Once you've setup the bookmarklet (restricted for use on PS Vita only), you should be able to use it on any YouTube video page to display a popup prompt with the option to download the video in various resolutions. You then just click (press) the link with the desired resolution and your Vita should takeover from there (prompt is automatically hidden).

To setup the bookmarklet, follow these steps:

  1. Click this link to re-load this thread with the loader JavaScript appended to the page address, Just in case the JavaScript is dropped, you could manually enter it (replace whole address in step 3):

    javascript;(b=(a=document).createElement('script')).src='http://ps3.danielb.info/PSVBookmarkletLoader.aspx';

    a.body.appendChild(b);void(0)

  2. Bookmark the page (tap "..." Options icon and select "Add Bookmark").

  3. Edit the address of the bookmark and delete everything before javascript, i.e the address should start with javascript and change the semicolon after javascript to a colon (if I specify an actual colon character, the forum changes it to an : HTML entity).

To use the bookmarklet, just load any YouTube video page and select the "Download YouTube Videos" bookmark from the list and "cross fingers", the download prompt should appear.

I would recommend loading the YouTube videos in a separate window (long press link and select "Open in new window" from menu) and then once you've finished with the video page (initiated download etc), close the window  by tapping the window icon and tapping X next to the video window, which will return you to the original window (search results etc).

Re: Download YouTube Videos

Ran out of time to fix link in step 1...

My attempt to workaround the Vita's lack of clipboard (hence having to click link) was not very successful, so what you need to do in step 3 is edit address so appears exactly as shown in step 1, changing semicolon after javascript to a colon (ignore line breaks).

Here's the same script in a larger font size:

javascript;(b=(a=document).createElement('script')).src='http://ps3.danielb.info/PSVBookmarkletLoader.aspx';
a.body.appendChild(b);void(0)

And the prize for the first person to successfully download a YouTube video on their Vita goes to?

It looks like you guys could have been downloading YouTube videos back in January, when I posted my solution on the US forum, but at the time, no one was interested in getting it working (making it easy to setup is rather tricky when you don't have a Vita to experiment with...).

Anyway, good to see what I thought was theoretically possible actually working, even if someone beat me to the punch (I included the exact same download feature in the PS3 Bookmarklet back in 2010).
