If they do increase the capacity it won't be because of the Vita launch. That said I think if they were going to do it then they would have done it by now. I suspect there is a technical reason behind it.

Indeed, even Xbox Live has never expanded the friends list limit to my knowledge.

I remember it being said the limit was hard coded into classic Xbox titles so they couldn't change it without breaking compatibility, although if this was still the case for Xbox 360 games is unclear as they still did not increase the list once all classic games were taken offline (which was done to get round some of the old limitations).

I would not be surprised if PSN has it hard coded into the games too though as Sony really dropped the ball when designing the PS3 OS by not leaving enough wiggle room to expand PSN functionality without having to make games aware of it (ie use less RAM so they can fit those extra functions).

PSN did increase the friends list cap at one point. It was originally 50, then they doubled it to 100. The problem is though, it screwed up a lot of the friends lists built into games after the capacity increased. Games would jumble up a random list of only 50 friends, even of you had more than 50 friends.

I don't think Sony would want to screw things up like that again…
100 is enough really. I just have an inability to manage who I want and who I don't want on my list.
