I got my Vita the other day after much hesitation and decided to take the plunge, I got everybodys golf, wipeout, Golden abyss, and some Hustle something Pool game, tried the gravity Rush Demo too..
3 out of those 5 games I have played are NOT @ VITA'S NATIVE RESOLUTION, it's like 480p or something....
why does nobody seem to care about this?? Studios should not be able to get away with this, there should be a warning on the Box or something, it's wrongful advertising with all the bull screen shots they release...
The inconsistent resolutions across games is an absolute joke, games go from Blurry and undercontrasted/washed out on the OLED screen to looking fine when games are native.

Yeah I did notice this myself. Take F1 201 for example, the car graphics are HORRIBLE! I can only gather the game was ported over from the 3DS version without any optimisation for Vita.
But the original Vita games like Unit 13 and Uncharted look great!
I just hope we don't get a repeat of companies adopting software to just 'work' on other systems, thus not making the most of the Vita hardware.
It could be argued that PS3 only titles look much better than XBOX titles due to the devoloper not having to design a game to be as 'adoptable' to as many systems. This can also be applied to lazy console ports to the PC platform.
Have you ever played a console port on a high end PC? They look awful!
PS: I have an XBOX, PS3, VITA, Galaxy S3, Asus EEE transformer and high end PC, so I am generally unbiased on these matters. :-)

I myself haven't noticed this, however the only Vita games I have are WipEout 2048 and Stardust, I have the MGS HD collection but need to remove games to finally play it. But now I've read this thread it's probably going to stick out lick a saw thumb. And anyway, there's more to games than just graphics/resolutions. But as customers I suppose we aught to complain, there's so much this console should have had from launch that Sony hasn't...

Yes many games such as Uncharted have been upscaled. Wipeout uses native with very nice anti-alising. I think it will take some time for people to fully understand the Vita's API and fully optimize code for it. Uncharted upscaling was an half arsed attempt tp reducing lag. But with launch games there is strict deadlines.
Don't be disappointed, expect better in the future. I'm sure game designers hate the pixelated look of upscaling too! Don't let it distract you too much from the gameplay and the graphics are still great!

Agreed on wipeout being stunning on the vita. Even though it's capped at 30fps it is amazing looking and great to play.
Everybodys golf for example though, If I play right after playing the wipeout demo, it's like I suddenly need glasses it is so blurry..
I just really hope that this is not a growing trend with game developers when making games for the vita; They run into optimization issues and just think 'Screw it, lets upscale it these fools won't know the difference anyway'. Because that is the feeling I am getting when most of the games I have played are upscaled....
I would prefer it if they gave us the option to play letterboxed with a black border around so at least the fidelity/contrast is not lost. Because it just looks awful to me, maybe It annoys more more becuase I'm a graphics ***** PC gamer, but I honestly think it's super lame that they do this.

Personally I couldn't give more of a damn for a little upscaling in some games, I am willing to tolerate it if it means that they have focused more on the gameplay and story.
Bad graphics I can live with, bad storyand/ or terrible gameplay are the dealbreakers. Take Gravity Rush for example. It's got cel-shaded graphics which are far from the visually stunning complex lighting and 3D models of WipeOut 2048 but the game is brilliant. Story is aight (so far) but gameplay is incredibly fun and that's what counts in the end.
Of course ideally we expect the whole package: Gameplay(No.1), Story(No.2), Graphics(No.3) and Replayability(No.4)
but I'm willing to forgive the last three if the gameplay is good, at least for now.
Deus Ex is considered the greatest game of all time by many people me included (duh) even though its graphics were a total joke for the time it came out (and the voice acting was tremendously bad, bahahah)
point being that if the first two requirements are met well, epicness is created.

As others have pointed out, I have only noticed this problem on launch titles which were clearly rushed.
Take Everybodys Golf, that appears to be running native if you look at the environment. However there seems to be overly-aggressive filtering applied on the whole game to hide the fact that the assets such as the HUD graphics appear to be designed for PSP resolution not Vita.
It also doesn't help that some games like F1 are ported from 3DS.
This is all likely to change over time and as others have pointed out, the same thing happened on PS3/360.
Also, in order to push the graphics of games to a higher level of realism its became the norm to render at a lower resolution then upscale. I had hoped they wouldn't do this on the Vita, but its hardly a shock that they have when its done all the time on home consoles.
When some games on PS3/360 are rendered at nearer the PS Vita resolution then upscaled to 720p, what hope would they have of pulling similar graphics on the Vita without doing the same trick of rendering lower than upscaling?
