Sony also doesn't have the same philosophy behind their tablets and the Vita.

I may be wrong, but my interpretation of the OP's post is that he wants to connect the PS3 controller to the VITA, not that he wants to control the PS3 with the VITA, in which case it is exactly what GraphiteGB said?
Having said that, one feature I would like to see (not sure if its possible) is the ability to control the music player on PS3 using the vita as an interface. I use the PS3 as my home stereo, through my surround sound kit, but I have to keep the TV on in order to use the controls. It would be nice to have an interface on vita which allowed the selection of tracks, compilation of playlists etc on the PS3, without the need to have the telly on!

In which case that isn't going to happen either for the reasons I mentioned earlier. If Sony wanted to include such connectivity they would have done it from the beginning as its already been implemented in the PSP. At the end of the day it's not going to work with the Vita as it relies too much on touch and motion controls. Every developer would have to come up with a completely new control scheme for every game and that realistically isn't going to happen.

You are missing the point. I dont want to have the audio or video output via the VITA, I want it to remain outputting through the PS3, but use the VITA as a remote with a touchscreen display, therefore given more flexibility to the way in which media can be used on the PS3 system. I still want the audio out through the optical from the PS3 to my amp, I just want to be able to select tracks etc on the VITA screen without having to switch on the TV.

I'm pretty certain in the PS3 remote play settings you can choose to output the Audio through PS3 and NOT the PSP/Vita.

DS3 to controll the vita. Not PS3
Also remember That DS3 useage on the PSP was Actualy hidden from Most users for along time as they Needed a USB hub to sync the DS3 to the PSP
So Sony DO NOT allways Enable features. but it does not mean they can't.
Boot up silent hill PS one game then, go on, O wait you can't yet.
Playstation suite is not finished yet so you can't... on vita.
( Rubbish game now anyway. better of with RE )
YouTube PS3 companion app HD video, NA 1.04/EU 1.00 720p HD Video
( Remote access controll usage, No DS3 used... )

I disagree that it was hidden to most users or that you needed a USB hub to sync it. I never used a USB hub.

I'm pretty sure it's been available since remote play was first implemented.
