Why vita will fail (not trolling just fact)

Just before I get accused of trolling I own the vita! but sold it when I came to my senses hear me out....

The  Vita is entering a market dominated by small and cheap games made popular by  the iPhone. The portions of the market not dominated by mobile device app  stores, Nintendo has a strangle hold on. Nintendo offers the only experiences  people can’t get on the app store by developing games like Mario and Zelda that  gamers have grown up with. If the Vita can’t give something to gamers they can’t  buy anywhere else it will fail.

The price point is another barrier preventing success for the Vita. Sony  strategically priced the Vita at $250 to match the 3DS, but Nintendo retaliated  by lowering their handheld’s price to $170. More important than the price is the  lack of compelling games. Of course the Vita has Uncharted, Super Stardust, and  other Sony exclusives gamers have come to love, but that is the problem. These  games are home console experiences that are better suited for the PS3. Why would  anyone want to play Uncharted: Golden Abyss on the Vita right after playing Uncharted  3? The game fully showcased what the PS3 was capable of by endowing gamers  with masterful set pieces. Now, a few months’ later gamers are expected to shell  out $50 plus the price of a Vita, not to mention the terrible memory  card price, to play a stripped down version of Uncharted. Stripped down is a  tough way to label Uncharted: Golden Abyss, which definitely looks great, but  the portable version does not hold up to its big brother.

Sony is under the impression that gamers want to play the same, or close to  the same, experience on the go. This kind of experience cannot be played out in  the ten to fifteen minute walks down the street or wait at the doctor’s office.  The only time playing the Vita could be practical for any gamer is for vacation  or traveling for business. Sony’s primary target group is too small of a niche;  there just isn’t a big enough market of gamers traveling across the country  looking for a home console experience on the go.

Another problem Sony will have in the American market is that the Americans  does not buy into dedicated hand held’s like the Japanese. If the Vita is to  succeed, it has to win over the Japanese market, which it has failed to do so  far. The Japanese loved the PSP, but that was mainly due to games like Monster  Hunter. A game, which is notably absent from the launch line up, but is  available on the 3DS.

Sony’s largest conundrum is that the Vita is offering sub par experiences  already available on consoles. If Sony wants to find success for the Vita they  need to shift their focus to something that works for the Vita alone; a game  experience that cannot be replicated on any other format. Offering a collection  of experiences available on the iPhone and home consoles is not enough to keep  the Vita boat afloat.

Yes that is what many have been asking for since the PSP came outThis kind of experience cannot be played out in  the ten to fifteen minute walks down the street or wait at the doctor’s officeMost portable gaming is played at home and yes their are also games that are avalelble for the short jurneys.  The only time playing the Vita could be practical for any gamer is for vacation  or traveling for business.  It offers both, The home console games types of mobile console games The Ds has been doing this for years

Re: Why vita will fail (not trolling just opinion)

Ive been a die hard Nintendo fan sicnce the Nes days had all there handhelds and loved them but the 3DS does not appeal to me.3D is a gimick in my eyes.

There are no good games out for it. Its all just mario land and kart but they are the same game over and over.

I love pokemon and  to my luck Black and White 2 is getting made for the DS and not 3DS so I still dont need to buy one. Sure if there was a Zelda, Metrio or F Zero out for it I would get it.(and no im not buying OOT cause its a remake).

it was a phenomenal game considering it was on a handheld and i doubt there is any game on nintendos hand helds that come even a fraction close to it

I'm confused, if you have been a huge Nintendo fan for so long then why are you slagging off the very games which MADE those Nintendo consoles popular?

The 3D is far from a gimmick, it adds depth perception.  That means when jumping across voids on Mario you aren't guessing, you can SEE how far away it is.  Same for Mario Kart, although it can be problematic as after playing for a while you start to lose the 3D sweet spot as your hands get tired.

Have you even played Mario Kart 7?  I never liked Mario Kart before, but this time they hit the nail on the head.  EVERYONE I know who has played it proclaims it as easily the best Mario Kart game ever.  I tried the demo of Modnation Racers and just had a hard time getting into it, it just didn't seem as fun as Mario Kart to me.

So I really don't get how you can claim to be a Nintendo fan if you are saying you don't like their flagship games.  Why else were you buying Nintendo consoles rather than their competition?

I heard you out and what you are saying makes no sense.

They can't possibly make ALL games on Vita an entirely unique experience that cannot be done on anything else, its just impossible.  The same can be said for every other portable device on the market.  But with things like T@G they are definitely trying to make SOME unique experiences - they just haven't been released yet.

You seem to forget that the whole reason Sony released a portable console was to have "a home console experience on the go".  They were aiming at a segment of the market which nobody had successfully tapped before, and the Vita is just an evolution of that.

The PSP delivered almost a home console experience, but was let down by a poor LCD, bad ergonomics and the lack of a second analog nub/stick.  Now the Vita comes along and fixies all that, delivering a full home console experience, which IS something no other portable device can claim.

Now granted you could be right that the market segment is too small, but that is not for lack of trying and is no reason for Sony to just give up.  The only alternative would have been for Sony to drop the portable console market entirely - would that have made more sense than to try to perfect what they started?  Hell no.

Then you complain that the should be making games which can ONLY work on Vita by using its unique functions.  Again, I think its pretty clear Sony are doing EXACTLY THAT again.  What about Little Big Planet Vita?  The touch screen controls in Virtua Tennis, FIFA, Super Stardust, etc.  Granted they might not be a compelling reason to buy a Vita game, but they ARE being used.

spot on alex m8

in my opinion the vita is so unique that nothing comes close to what is is trying to do and in some cases has achieved very early in its life
