playing videos on vita

why isn't it simpler?

I had a psp and remember spending hours converting video using psp9 so i could play them. i would have hoped the vita would have moved on but alas no.

I have had my vita about 3 weeks and at short notice i am travelling tomorrow, i thought great i will put some videos on my vita to watch on the way. It appears i still have to convert videos and have to install a content manager on my pc?

end result - frustrated, disappointed with sony, can't be bothered, will take laptop and leave psp in cupboard.

why can't it just be simple!

Re: playing videos on vita

agreed, i spent hours on this and couldnt figure out why they wouldnt play

content manager is needed  to transfer any content, no free access to memory card as psp. Someone suggested it has locks on conversion quality and i agree. I spent hours making invalid files and allegedly there are locks to prevent video of equal or better quality than whats on psn from playing. xilisoft video converter ultimate has a vita profile and seems to circumvent these locks, had some excellent hd results. pspvideo 9 and xvid4psp created invalid file after invalid file at higher quality than psp settings

Re: playing videos on vita

It is simpler, Vita supports 720p. Which PSP does not. So files From PS3 don't have to be down sampled unless 1080p.

Even Scene Groups release content in MP4 now. So all the pirated MP4 content will now play native...(as long as you avoid 1080p and they obey H264 profiles which you are required to do even for Ipod touch and Ipads)

You Dont need content manager files can be transfered of the vita own web browser from your Computers IP address... or direct download links from sites.

If you Get twonky 7 and it provides a posh remote access that the vitas can use via wifi N from a different room in the house to transfer files from computer.

Finding any thing but MP4/M4V files on legal sites Is actualy the hard part now a days...as long as you stay away from Apple.com and .mov

Re: playing videos on vita

I've used DVDfab8 it's a trail but its one of the few i found that lets you convert a whole film in a good quality. Seems to add a smallish logo in the top left screen for the first minute then it disapears.

Re: playing videos on vita

thanks for the replies - like is said its not simple - i know it is possible but i don't want to mess about converting files, installing new programs, connecting via browser etc etc etc

let me copy a file there and it should play.

its up to sony really, i am less likely to use an take my vita with me when i travel if taking videos is a chore. I will end up taking laptop and then playing games on that instead of the other way round.

Sony - stop trying to restrict things just make a product that is user friendly........

Re: playing videos on vita

To me its video playing capability is moot anyway, due to the memory card problem.

With only a 32GB memory card, I just do not have the space to put videos on there.

Although Sony could help a lot there by allowing streaming in the web browser and/or DLNA.  It sucks that to play videos from the PS3 you have to use remote play, when it would work a LOT better if the PS3 was able to act as a DLNA server and the Vita a DLNA client, so we could stream it properly without re-compressing it.

Re: playing videos on vita

i wouldnt mind paying for extra memory cards to hold my videos that's not really an issue for me.

its just the hassle and time involved to actually get a video to play.

Realy at 200MB for 30mins at 704 * 404 for SD you don't have room. OK

Your assuming the files are SD only on the PS3 HDD not all are.
1080p streaming takes up to much battery useage via DLNA. ( have you got a secondary battery yet, ) Having the PS vita Downscale instead of the PS3 means kissing the battery good by. Never mind running Wifi N at constant full speed at the same time as the video conversion.

Having to plug in a portable device to watch video makes it being portable pointless. ( but this is standard problems with batteries usage.)

You can get your laptop/tablet/portable DVD player out instead and have a bigger screen to watch on.

A good reason to turn off 1080p on PS vita as they allready have and limit it to 720p may be not but they have.

PS3 conversion on mains via remote play does not have these problems.

Having more Video formats playable could lead to sony having to pay to include it which could inturn rase the costof the Vita.

We know how sony are anti piracy they also could have left some out for that reasion.

It does not take long to convert a film though

Below is a Signature

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?
