strange 'near' issue

Whilst Near now seems to have my location correctly, when first setting up it seemed to set somewhere 180 miles away. Now whenever I update my near location the system houses that I've travelled 180miles. So far today Near thinks I've travelled over 900 miles despite the vital never leaving my living room.

Is there any way to check/remove locations to remedy this?

Re: strange 'near' issue

Maybe it detected the Wifi of a neighbour who's Mac address is linked to an address somewhere. If that's the case then you'd have to get them to update their skyhook db entry.

Re: strange 'near' issue

I don't know about the detecting wifi issue.  A possibility I guess.

Since I have the 3G model, I have disabled wifi and gone to 'private zones' and asked it to update my details there.

It still believe I am 180 miles away from my actual location.  Shouldn't GPS sort this out?

As it currently operating, Near is useless for me!

Re: strange 'near' issue

GPS rarely works in doors. If you really want to use GPS you'd need to disable 3G as well as Wifi I think.

Not sure why it would do that with 3G though since that's using cell phone towers primarily.

Re: strange 'near' issue

That was my thought too.  Just don't understand what's going on with it.

I have just turned the system on and gone to Near>Settings>Sharing Settings>Private Zones.

This loads the map showing my location as Birmingham (I'm actually in Hull)

Tap the icon in lower left to update location details and it still shows as Birmingham.

Exit that and go back to Near main screen. Click the Near icon in the top right to update details and it states I've travelled less than one mile.  A good start since it hasn't left the house :smileyhappy:

Selecting Out and About shows that It still believes I am in the West Midlands.

There are times it realises I am in Hull and uploads that I've travelled 183 miles!

Is there any way to delete all Near information and start again?

Re: strange 'near' issue

Mine won't accurately work either just on 3G its never got my location correct. (in near)

If I use google maps though it shows my location so very odd.

Re: strange 'near' issue

Only way to reset Near is to do a factory reset through the settings menu. It's no problem - takes about 5 mins. Just make sure you've sync'd trophies and remove your mem card just to make sure you don't delete your saves.

Just out of interest, have you ever lived/stayed around the location it claims you are located (i.e. Brum)?

Another thing to do is try taking it a few miles away. If it suddenly says you are in Hull then there is something about your location at home (Wifi or cell tower or something) that is making it think you're in Brum.

Re: strange 'near' issue

Nope never lived or stayed in the area.

May give the system a reset and see how that goes.  I'll let you know how it does.

Thanks for the help

Re: strange 'near' issue

well, even after a reset, Near detects my location as Birmingham.

Guess I'm going to have to live with that for now.

Just seems odd that it cam be so wrong!

there are times that it detects correctly, so then thinks I've travelled from Birmingham to Hull.
