I believe you can't at present, though it would be helpful.  I would prefer the option of using the screen/buttons, scrolling through terms and conditions etc felt a bit slow! with the touch screen.

Seems like a lot of people would prefer to be able to use either the touch screen or the buttons, so it is likely to be added in an update at some time.

I'm not too fussed using the touch screen to be honest. I've gotten used to it already, and it makes things a little more speedy, rather than navigating with buttons. It can be annoying though, like on the Table Soccer AR game. I couldn't even get past the tutorial.

I'm not sure why people have such a problem with it. I use the same method on my iPhone and iPad and it works just fine. You just have to get use to it. Considering what a big deal Sony is making of the touch functionality I doubt they will add normal button, d-pad and stick control.

It is good having the touchscreen but an option to use either control method would be nice

Just got the Vita and I agree with this request.

Forced navigation with front touchscreen is a real problem.  Scrolling through the initial license agreement feels like a ritual to carve scratches into a beautiful new screen.  Aggrivating and unnecessary when you could hold down a button.  It's not great in other cases either.  For example, consider the poor ergonomics of handling a side-heavy device in one hand, while navigating with the other.  The rear touchscreen is more natural.  For gaming, both touchscreens have tons of fun potential.  But basic navigation should be possible with the device balanced in two hands.

As a request to Sony, please either:

- Offer *rear* touchscreen as an alternative to front touchscreen for basic navigation, or

- Offer an onscreen pointer controlled via analog

I can't agree with that I'm afraid. Touch screen control feels just fine when setting up and navigating. It's a touch screen device and that's the way it should be. Using buttons and the d-pad defeats the purpose. If you don't like that then you got the wrong console and should think about returning it.

It would be nice to have the option, at least that way we dont have to wipe fingerprints off the screen everytime we want to switch games etc.

With all those buttons it makes a bit of sense to be able to use them or at least the rear touch pad.

I'd like to see one of the sticks used for zooming in/out of web pages.

I agree 100%. It completely defeats the object of the Vita, as it's key selling point was having the touchscreen, and if you're not a fan of using it for the Menu, then personally, I doubt you're going to have a lot of fun using touchscreen controls in-game. If Sony included the D-pad as an optional extra for the Menu navigation, it would just steer the customers away from using the touchscreen, which works perfectly if you ask me, I love it. For those who own keypad phones etc, it may seem weird at first, but you just need to get used to it, that's all.

I've been using touchscreens now for over 3 years, on my mobile phone(s) first and now on my tablet too.

For me it now feels intuitive and second nature so I really find it hard to appreciate these people who moan about the Vita using touchscreen

I mean c'mon, you knew it was touchscreen before you bought it so how can you complain now?

No ones complaining, it would just be nice to have the option is all. I mean the d-pad is on the console so why not let us use it load games etc, to acoid putting fingerprints on the screen all the time. If its optional then i dont see the harm at all.

I have a HTC phone and an Asus Transformer TF101 Tablet.

Touchscreens, I don't have a problem with... but the user should have 100% control of whether or not to use it in Livearea or games.
