hi I need help choosing. My holidays are coming up and I want a good handheld device to take with me. I've heard both of these handhelds are good in terms of games like mario and uncharted. But ive also heard bad things about both. I only have enough to buy one so what do you think is the best?

Make a list of the games you want to play, Vita vs 3DS. I think that should be your main consideration.

These sorts of threads arent going to really help you mate. Firstly, your on a PlayStation forum, so most will say Vita anyway. Secondly, its down to personal tastes.

It depends on what you want from the handheld. Do you want 3D? or do you want console-quality games? Do you want to play Nintendo exclusives or Sony exclusives (Mario, Pokemon vs Uncharted, Gravity Rush). What games are you into?

I personally love my PSVita, havent played a 3DS so cannot comment, but i have a host of games on my Vita, and still play it daily, and i have had it since launch.

Like QualityWrong says, your best making a list.  I own both, & I would say to get a Vita, but your really should make the game list for both consoles, & also look into what's coming in the future.

Both handhelds have great games at the minute, for personally the Vita's future line up appeals to me more than the 3DS.

This isn't exactly the best place to be asking a question like that considering its a Vita centric forum and answers will be somewhat biased not to mention the Playstation fanboys will come out of the woodworm with their "Vita is the best and 3DS is crap" comments, especially referencing the graphics disparity which shouldn't be a decision maker any way. I own both and both have their pros and cons. The best thing to do is to look at which one has games out and coming out that you want to play. You can't really go wrong with either.

As others have said, the majority will say Vita as your asking on a Playstation forum.

I have both and I haven't touched my DS since the Vita comes out but that's because I love games such as Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Metal Gear Solid HD etc.

REASONS TO GET VITA:

-3ds 3D FUNCTION REALLY HURTS YOUR EYES (I HAVE PLAYED ONE)

-PSVITA HAS CONSOLE QUALITY GAMES (UNCHARTED, WIPEOUT)

-PS STORE HAS LOTS OF PSMINIS AKA SMALL GAMES THAT CAN BE REALLY ADDICTING AND THEY ALSO OFFER PSP GAMES, SO YOU CAN BUY PSVITA AND PSP AND HAVE THEM ALL ON ONE CONSOLE

-PSVITA IS BETTER AS I HAVE HAD A DS SINCE THEY FIRST CAME OUT (AND A GAMEBOY) BUT THE PSVITA IN TERMS OF GAMES AND SOFTWARE, IS A BIG STEP AHEAD OF NINTENDO

Happy??? hehe tried to make it short :D hope this helps m8!

AND YOU GET TROPHIES!!!! Wow trophies don't make a game or platform better just pointless bragging rights.

Own both enjoy both.

As said befor look at the games then choose, don't go reeding into fanboy DRAMA.

We have had loads of people complaining about the lack of this and that for the Vita so have a big look at what games it has now and what is coming and same for the 3DS then you can make your choice on what suits you.

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?

Buy a N-Gage :V

But seriously, as the others said. It's down to what you want to play, and I suppose what you are looking for in the system. Both sides have pros and cons, you just need to take a look and draw up a Vita vs 3DS XL chart.

As I said to begin with, look at the games you fancy and see which system has more of them. I also ought to have mentioned that the Vita also plays a fair proportion of the PSP's back catalogue (those games that have been made available through the Vita's store) whereas the 3DS will play any DS games. Both have online stores with cheaper mini games available.

I have both, and I have PSP and DS. In all honesty, I prefer my Vita to my 3DS at the moment but it really does come down to the games I'm playing. 3DS's game catalogue is still a little disappointing, despite the length of time it's been out; the DS back catalogue, though, might be reason enough to get a 3DS (or indeed a DSi).

I have no problem (eye strain or otherwise) with the 3D graphics on the 3DS, but if I play the games in 2D, I hardly miss the extra dimension. That's a matter of taste, of course. If you can take the opportunity to try them both out, that would be a good thing.

I'm amused to note that there are far more people warning you that the thread might be biased by Vita fanboys that there are actual fanboy comments. :)

3DS's fake 3D hurts most people's eyes so they turn it down making it a DS

still can't understand why the second screen is here as your attention is on the screen where the action takes place and it never hurt gameplay to have life bar or score on the same image as the one where action takes place

it's another gimmick/trinket

The 3DS may hurt your eyes, at first.  That is because your eyes have to learn to cope with the 3D effect.

First week I had my 3DS I had eye strain and headaches.  Since then I have been fine and its the best 3D effect I have ever seen, including the cinema, because its more vibrant than any other 3D technology (due to the glasses).

Also I find the 3D makes a HUGE difference in Mario Kart and Starfox.  Particularly due to the 3DS screen being so low resolution you totally appreciate the extra depth perception.  Its just a shame they didn't go all out as qHD in 3D would have been seriously awesome.

On the other hand, the resolution/detail on the Vita makes a lot of games practical that would just suck on 3DS.

Like everyone else said, its all about the games.

I enjoy my 3DS mostly for multiplayer gaming at 3DS meetups, but the majority of the time I enjoy single player games on my Vita.

That said, I do still find myself wishing Gravity Rush was on PS3 as well as Vita, as that game would be awesome on the big screen.

Incidentally I am actually PRO the dual screen of the 3DS too.  One thing I HATE about Vita is how horribly greased up the screen gets from touching it all the time.  Even if I just washed my hands it still distorts the picture.  This is why the second screen on the 3DS is good, because if you want touch based controls its on its own screen so you aren't having to wipe the main display screen every 5 minutes.

Like has already been said... look at the number of games on each system you want to play, and the price associated with them, and make your choice.

Personally I'd go for the 3DS.  It has a huge back catalogue of physical media DS games that generally retain their value quite well and can be sold on - unlike download only PSP games.  The 3DS library of games is far bigger and currently more exciting than the PS Vita's too (though I might be biased as I am selling my Vita and keeping my 3DS - and PSP).

The 3DS will be hugely supported by developers for years to come, whereas it's too early to say for the Vita.  I'm guessing it will be supported like the PSP has been.  Possibly slightly better and more in the western hemisphere.

If graphics are your only/main consideration then buy the Vita.  But remember that the Vita's graphics power is not actually near that of the PS3 (as the initial hype suggested) and the PS3 is relatively soon to be replaced by the far more powerful (it's safe to assume) PS4, which will take the glossy edge off the Vita's graphics abilities further.  For me (and most others, I'd guess) handheld gaming is about the quality of games on the go - not so much the graphics.  However, I did buy a PS Vita in part to experience the fantastic graphics and have been left disappointed.

If it's quality of games you're after then the 3DS has a far bigger choice of titles, past, present and future.  The Vita's big arsenal gives Assassins Creed, Little Big Planet and Call of Duty to look forward to, plus possibly a Gran Turismo (probably in 2016 based on Polyphonics speed when getting previous versions to market).  Obviously there are a few more titles to get excited about (Soul Sacrifice etc.) but then everyone got excited about Resistance : Burning Skies - and look where that left us!  lol.  I'm sure games will get better as the system gains age.

Sony have mentioned some cool stuff for the Vita, but it's mostly all theoretical and probably will never be utilised.  Remote play, so you can play your PS3 games that you own on Blu Ray through your Vita?  Doubt that will ever happen properly (if at all) - especially since Sony bought that Cloud based gaming company in the past couple weeks.  Then there's been hints of using the PS Vita as a controller device for the PS3 (or 4) similar to what the Wii U will offer.  Hmm... I'll wait to see about that one.  Even if it's released it will likely be as an after-thought add on for just a handful of games, and will be as about effective at changing the way we play as the PS Move was.  Time will tell.

Some of the apps for the Vita are handy (like youtube, skype, even near), and Nintendo still don't seem to have understood network updates and apps properly so their online offerings are generally not as satisfying - but there's far more available from Nintendo.

Also think about pricing: not just of the console cost, but of games, memory cards, and depreciation.  I think it's likely that the Vita will see a significant official price drop before Christmas.  The must-have memory is PS Vita specific and extremely overpriced and expensive.  Games are mostly comparable to the 3DS at the moment.  I'd imagine the 3DS is a beter bet, value wise, speaking in the long term.  Of course, that might not be of concern to you.

At the end of the day it all comes down to what type of experience you prefer.  Weigh it all up and make your choice.  For me, there's just not enough on the Vita to make it worth owning right now.  Hopefully that will change in the future, and if it does I'll no doubt buy one again.  But for now I'm relying on my 3DS to keep me entertained on the go.  Hope that helps a bit.  Good luck!

Imo I would go for the Vita but again that is just my opinion. For me there is only 2 games on the 3DS I want and that is Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid 3. Am not a Mario fan and am not a Zelda fan as to me that is all that seems to come out on Nintendo Platforms.

Where the PS Vita just suites me a lot better. Uncharted, FIFA, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Resistance ect. Then future games like Need For Speed, Killzone and dare I say Call Of Duty.

Or just get a GAME.COM (not the website the handheld console) anyone remember them?
