Backing Up a YLOD PS3...is my method possible?

4 Replies 1,349 Views Created 23-08-2009

My launch day 60 gig died a week ago of YLOD. I have decided to get a slim, as it represents the best value as well as 120 gig and another two years warranty. What I was thinking is how I can back up my 60 gig, even though it is dead. If my understanding is correct, I can remove the HDD and insert it into a friends PS3, thereby giving me access to my game saves. I should be able to copy those game saves on to a USB Flash drive and then format the hard drive removing all info including my user account before I sell my broken PS3 to Gamestop (for 70 euros!).

Once I get my new Slim, I can put the saves onto my new system, put my old account on, re-download all my PSN games and as far as I am aware, trophies are saved on to the account, so I should get them back?

This would mean I would be in the same position as I was before the YLOD, but on a new system.

Does this make sense and has anybody done this?

Is there a special way you need to put game save files onto a USB Flash drive?

Would it even be possible to hook up the PS3 HDD to a PC and get access to via that method?

Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

Cheers

As soon as you put it in your friends ps3 it would force a format, and if your friend piut his hdd back in afterwards it would format that hdd also. Im sorry but if you don't have a backup all that data is lost. You can't use an enclosure to get the data via pc either.

Unfortunately, once you've removed your PS3's internal HDD it will force you to format it as soon as you put it into any other console (even putting it back into the same one). You should be able to back stuff up by hooking up to a PC, but you won't be able to copy certain content (like demos, installed game data, protected game data etc) back onto another console via that method. It will work for things like unprotected game saves, videos, pictures and music though.

Re: Backing Up a YLOD PS3...is my method possible?

Son of a.....

Looks like Sony did not think this potential problem through. All I want is game saves. Would I also lose online progress info, like my COD4 status, I have done well and would not like to start again.

What I also want to make sure of is that I wipe the HDD before I sell it to Gamestop. If I remove it and place it back, this will force the HDD to be wiped if they fix it and sell it on?

Re: Backing Up a YLOD PS3...is my method possible?

Yes this is true in most cases but I fixed my YLOD as per the online guide (Youtube) and I'd taken the 500gb hard drive out and put the original one back in.

The idea was to restore the 60gb drive with my resent data from the 500gb drive. Then do a data transfer from PS3 (original) to PS3 (Slim) but it died again and I'm not in the mood to fix if again!

At least I managed to get a resent backup before it died, just a shame its not all my saves.....at least I've still got my GT5 data. That was the biggy for me.
