By the looks of it it's the cable, can't you use a standard hdmi cable. I know DVI usually only carrys video and no audio so it makes me wonder what else is missing for the HDMI control.

yep, thats gonna be the cable then.  you need to use a HDMI cable (both ends) They are pretty cheap and uoui can get them for under a tenner.
