Once again I am trying to sort my sons PS3. Keeps freezing during games. Can't do anything with it except unplugging it.
Can anyone help me with how to sort this.
You should always turn off your console by either using the PS button on the controller, and then selecting "Turn Off System" - if the console seems to be freezing, then you should still be able to turn off the console by pressing and holding the power button - you may need to hold it for at least 30 seconds. This should always work.
If you don't turn the PS3 off correctly, it may damage the data on the hard drive, sometimes causing irreparable issues.
To get into safe mode / recovery / diagnostice mode (all different names for the same thing) -
Plug in your console. Press and hold the power button on the console, keep holding it unti it turns off again.
Then, press and hold the power button until you hear a double beep.
You will then be prompted to connect your controller using the USB cable and press the PS button.
You will be prompted with 6 options.
Option 3 will resolve most basic issues with freezing.
Option 4 will act like a 'defrag' does on your PC - reorganise all your data so it's more easily accessible (quicker)
Option 5 will complete a quick restore of your PS3 (this will delete all the data on your PS3's hard drive)
If this sounds daunting, or doesn't work as above, please call your local PlayStation Support Centre and we can go through the best troubleshooting options over the phone.
Thanks for that. All went pretty good (I think)
Updates were all up to date, however now when trying to install 2.05 comes up with Error Code '80710736'
Would you be able to help with this please.
Not 100% on the '80710736' error code - it's not in the official database.
But, anything starting with 8071 generally relates to network connectivity issues.
3 things to ensure:
1. If you're using WiFi, ensure the signal strength is consistent, and above 75% (also replace with Ethernet if possible, to test)
2. Make sure you are using the PlayStation in isolation (make sure your computer is not downloading a movie in the background - if possible power off, turn off WiFi or unplug any other Internet capable device)
3. Check with your ISP to ensure your speed has not been capped, or they don't have any other general service issues.
If possible, try another ISP (take your console to a mate's place)
I had the some problem with a new 320g PS3 that was freezing alot and I did turned it off by the power button and when the unit restarted I get a message saying the hard disks file system is corrupted and to restore the system
I tried Restore File System and even tried Full Format on Hard Disk and still had a freezing problem
then I called sony and was told to return it to the retailer as it faulty and under the 30 day old
EB gave me a replacement unit .
To my shock the new unit had the same problem and sony again told me to return it to EB as this unit was also faulty too the EB staff where in shock also and very helpful as I record the problem onthe video camera on my phone
I was sick of it and ask EB to exchange the PS3 to a another brand of console
Just a note I am not a fan boy or trolling this post is just my experience with the PS3
this is my case number -edited out- -sbs
Sorry to hear of your issues there WarDevil,
It's definitely uncommon for a PS3 to have issues like that you have described.
I hope your ultimate outcome was satisfactory in any case :)
was having the same problem with freezing games and went through all the safemode options as described now my ps wont read my disks and when the disk actually shows up in the menu it wont play. any sugestions guys
Is this issue occuring with all of your game discs? If your console is not reading any discs, unfortunately it may require servicing.
In any case you will need to contact our Support Centre for further assistance.

When it tells me to plug in my controller and then press the PS button, nothing happens, can you please explain that part better or give a possible solution
All controllers need to be a registered device with the PS3 to work, sometimes a controller can lose sync with the PS3 so you need to reset it.
Here is a video showing where the button is to do this.
Then use a USB cable and re register the controller and you should be good to go.
That's if it is a offical Sony controller.
If it's a different brand, well Sony can and have change the system software numorous times to make clone contollers suddenly not work, if that's what you have there is nothing you can do except get a proper Sony controller.
Hi i have triedeverything you have suggested now when it say connect controller with a usb it just freezes and doesnt let me go any further. any suggestions would be a great help, or i'm i going to have to get a new ps3
Sorry to hear that your controller is not responding correctly.
Is there anywhere specifically that your console is freezing? Are you getting any error messages arise on the screen at all?
Without further information and for the quickest resolution, we would recommend that you contact your local PlayStation Support Centre for further assistance.
Hope this helps.
