We have a PS3 40gb that won't turn on. My son tried to turn it on yesterday and the light turned green briefly and then turned red and blinked. We have tried unplugging it, turning it off at the switch ont he back, leaving it overnight and still not working this morning. My son is devestated as it is his birthday next week and he has friends coming round to play on the PS3 with him. Can anyone please help?! Many thanks in anticipation. Diane

To help you identify what the lights mean on the front of the console, I have created a guide here:
i just got home last night from an 18 day vacation. so havn't used my ps3 in 19 days.. and i have the same 3 beep, red flashing light issue.. it goes straight to red, no yellow..
sometimes it doesnt go on at all, sometimes i get 5-10min..
i pulled out the HDD, cleaned it.. still nothing, did the fan test, that didnt help either.. i don't think its an overheating issue, cause its freakin freezing out here and my ps3 has plently of place for the fan 2 work..
hopefully i can fix this, i don't want to buy that new cheap plastic ps3..
i've got an 80gb fat one, but i have bumped up the mem to 256..
it's been on for 20min now.. seems okay, i saw there was a system update, it wasn't mandatory tho, but i updated it anyways.. software is now version 4.31..
i deleted a bunch of games as well, got like 77gb free now..
Is it possible for my PS3 to be too cold?
I have the blinking red light issue and like others i have tried the fan test, it isnt dusty and has plenty of ventilation space. However, it has been left with no power, for best part of 2 weeks now, in a cold room (sodding weather).
Please help if you can
It is possible for the PS3 to be too cold, and if it's brought from too cold into room temperature then condensation can occur within and damage the components.
If the PS3 is in a room where the temperature frequently changes erratically then it may be an idea to leave it an hour or two before plugging it in to allow any possible condensation to dissipate.
The room would have to be going from VERY cold (Single figures C) to room temperature for this to happen though.
As for cognac-vsop, I think that PS3 has probably seen better days and will need some form of repair to get it going again. A Red flashing light within 10 minutes of powering on tends to indicate an internal component fault akin to that of the YLOD and it's advised that you contact Customer Support to arrange a service/exchange.
I have the same problem. I have tried the fan test and it still doesn't work. I have one of the original 60GB ones.manufactured in 01/07
serial number : CE132044194-CECHA01
This is the only woking sollution!
I recovered my 60gb model PS3.
I bought mine off of Amazon, it still has the sticker on it and it is the backwards compatible 60gb model. It turned off in the middle of gaming (went yellow and then 3 beeps and blinked red) and it would oly work for a few seconds. So i waited 10 minutes and it was working fine, i went on the internet and then it shut down in the same way after about 5 minutes, now it turns green then yello then a blinking red. What can i do?
Options ... (Increasing order of cost)
1. Try fix it yourself - plenty of vids on YouTube - ps3 hairdrier fix.
2. Take it to a local computer repair shop.
3. Send it to Sony in exchange for a refurbished console.
4. Buy a second hand ps3 from eg eBay, pawn shop, video game shop.
5. Buy a new one.
I have a 60gb version first gen PS3 that is now malfunctioning. I tried to turn it on to eject Darksiders so I can play Mirrors Edge and instead of turning on completely the light turns green, then yellow, then blinking red. Do I real have YLoD or is it something else? Can anyone help me? :(
Try unplugging your PS3 then holding down the start button for about 35 seconds. It got mine going!
also if you want to blow out the dust without disassembling it unplug powercord then hold down eject button - the fan will then go to high revs and blow out a lot of dust also cool things down a bit.@nativeluis18
