PS3 Does Not Detect External Hard Drive

51 Replies 118,238 Views Created 15-04-2009

Hi!

I just bought an external hard drive for my PS3 and to my frustration the PS3 does not detect it but the circle spins around for about 5 seconds at the top right when I plug it in.

I would really appreciate any help given  :manhappy:

Many thanks!!!!!

I have a 2tb WD hard drive and is formatted to a FAT 32 but my 320g PS3 will not pick this up but my older PS3 in the other room will recognise the hard drive and play it.

Haha, it's incredible how a relatively simple topic can create so much chaos.  It seems to be down to people just spouting stuff that they don't know about.

External drives then,  I want to get one.  So far, I get the fact it needs to be in FAT32 so I can convert.  So the concerning thing now is power - can someone confirm that PS3 able to power USB powered drives?

If it makes any difference, I was lookig at the Seagate 500GB expansion.

Is it FAT32 formatted? If not you will have to reformat it

I also just got an Iomega 1TB HD. I reformatted it to FAT32 with the Disk Utility on my mac, but it's not getting detected on my PS3. I'm connecting through USB, so I don't know if that's a problem, but I know at one point I was able to connect my smaller 250G Iomega to the PS3....sad day. Any ideas?

Use a program called Mini Partition wizard 6, Format the ext. Hdd and change the drives system to Fat32.

Make four new cases called Game, Photo, Music, Data. Then you should be on your way. Greetings From Denmark :)

As suggested by Pendrake, download this simple application for Windows:

http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.exe

What I did first was to split my external HDD by creating two equal-size partions; not necessary but I wanted to have half my external HDD in FAT32 for PS3 use, and the other half NTFS (for non-PS3 use where I need to transfer files larger than 4GB).  If you want to do this, in Windows right-click Computer and choose Manage.  Under Storage > Disk Management, you should see your external HDD.  Right-clicking it will give you your options to format, delete volume and create simple volumes.  If you're not sure what you're doing, don't go any further.

or there's this other way from ridgecrop, uses the run command in the start button area.

just adding to the already many ways of achieving fat 32 on an external drive, i've used the above method many times and it works for me 100% of the time :)

Does your external HDD use mains  power or does it draw its power through the USB connection?
